We hit the rooftop of an abandoned multi-storey car park in Tobacco Dock to try out croquet as teambuilding
Am I the only person who associates the sport of croquet with pensioners? I imagine old people clad in white who alternate a game of croquet with a spot of badminton. With such associations at the back of my mind, I’ll admit I wasn’t mad keen on our teambuilding evening at Skylight London.
It’s fascinating to see the number of faintly quaint sports that are enjoying a moment thanks to hip London bars needing to find something with which to stand out from the crowd: Bounce
(ping pong), Puttshack
(mini golf) and London Shuffle Club
(shuffleboard) spring to mind, in particular. Now, don’t get me wrong, it certainly works: all these venues have been hugely successful.
Skylight opted for croquet as its chosen renaissance sport, and SquareMeal was invited down to try out a round of the venerable British game. Our verdict? We loved it. All my pensioner prejudice went out the window the moment I grabbed that mallet.
So what makes it so good? You can choose to compete against each other on an individual basis, which is sure to bring out your inner warrior, or you can compete as a team against other teams, which produces that requisite sense of bonding. The epic view of the city rooftops also adds to the experience, not to mention the many street-food vendors and bars on site.
Two of the croquet courses are on a covered lower level so whatever the weather does, you can still play. But on a warm evening, there really is nothing like watching the sun set over London while sipping beers and laughing with your colleagues on the terrace’s expanse of lawn.
Games start at £25pp and are available throughout the summer (until 23 September). There are four people per game and four people per team.
It’s £10 to book a table with the possibility of pre-ordering drinks.
