SquareMeal Review of Mabel's

This Covent Garden newcomer takes the former Jewel Covent Garden space and reworks it as all-day destination, from 10am breakfasts through to drinks in the Den bar until 1am. Choose from avocado on toast for brunch to fish and chips or half a smashed chicken served with salt-baked potatoes, fennel and apple slaw later in the day. There’s also a bar menu featuring the likes of cheese and meat boards, small pizzas and burgers. The cocktail list includes classics and signatures such as Tarte Tatin, made with Sipsmith vodka, calvados, pressed apples and caramel syrup. Mabel’s is the work of Novus Leisure, behind 46 venues including Jewel Bar Piccadilly and Babble Mayfair.

Rocked up midweek at 6pm for our pre-theatre booking - unable to locate the reservation. Bit of phaffing and chatting into a head mic then lo! The table right in front of us was declared ours. Whilst the bloke took himself off to use the facilities, not one member of staff acknowledged me, made any attempt to clear what was quite a dirty table, nor bring over any menus. By the time he returned I had clocked that no-one was actually eating (nor was there any enticing aromas of food in any stages of preparation) and was also already beginning to get a headache from the thumping bass of the very loud muzak. That knowing look passed between us and without the need for words, we fled to the somewhat more warming and welcoming bosom of Wahaca's just up the road!

The staff were welcoming, however after 20 mins we had to ask to place our order. Granted they were quite busy but the can be no excuse for tables not being cleared in a timely manner, throughout our meal we had others detritus on the table next to us. Only ordered shared bread as a starter, but that took another 20 mins and came with our main!! When we paid by card there was nothing to indicate there was already 10% service charge added, but we were asked did we want to add a gratuity!!?? This establishment was sorely understaffed for those wishing to dine. Two sets of customers left without ordering while we were there. Very disappointed.

This is my second time at Mabels, the first was when it had just opened with a friend and we had a lovely meal and enjoyed it so I chose it this time for a works dinner and it didn't disappoint. We arrived earlier than our booking which wasn't an issue and we were able to be seated . There are different areas to Mabels so I wasn't sure where we would be seated but enjoyably we were up on their mezzanine level (8 of us) so out of the way a bit but still able to enjoy the ambiance. Sounds daft but the smell is so lovely, I don't know what they use but when you walk in it just smells delicious and fresh. Food wise was great, good selection and our waiters were prompt and able to cater for some fussy eaters! Drinks arrived quickly and the 2 for 1 cocktails were a great offer. A Wednesday night so no dancing downstairs unfortunately but we'll definitely be back. Is a great venue for all types of nights out whether it be work group events or romantic couples.

We booked a table but turned up three quarters of an hour early. It wasn't a problem and we were asked where we would like to sit. The staff were very friendly and interesting. We ordered food unfortunately the risotto I was brought wasn't the one I had ordered. It was the vegetarian on and not the chicken. The waitress said not to worry and said we could have the other one anyway as it would have to be thrown away. She brought the chicken risotto to me very quickly. I had been delivered to the wrong table. I have got to say the vegetarian risotto was sublime and the chicken risotto was equally tasty. My friend had ordered the pear and goats cheese salad, which was delicious. We finished our meal with figs and cream. It certainly was one of the best meals I have had in some time. The wines as well were lovely. Decor imaginative. Atmosphere fun. Just the place for a pre theatre meal. Would certainly visit again.
