Home to one of the most elegant and welcoming dining rooms in this swanky side of town, Greig’s has been doing a roaring trade in hearty British classics for more than 50 years. The menu is straightforward: a smattering of 1980s-style starters done well (the prawn cocktail and toasted goats’ cheese salad were favourites), followed by British-sourced grills and a few choice sides. We found the mixed grill a tad underwhelming – let down by a duff-quality sausage and indifferent bacon. The 12oz rib-eye is a better bet (huge, juicy and succulent), although ours could have done with more seasoning. Excellent French-accented sauces – including the creamiest Béarnaise this side of the Channel – add savoury notes. A vintage soundtrack, first-rate service and a house-made French whisky (now available as a stellar digestive – alongside the cheeseboard, naturally) combine to make Greig’s an ideal choice for a private dining event or an intimate dinner-date.
