“Fine dining in Croydon – who’d have thought it”, muses a fan of this well-liked neighbourhood restaurant – a place that’s noted for “deliciously innovative food” at prices that would shame many central London establishments. Head chef and co-owner Joby Wells made his mark in top venues such as The Square, Zafferano’s and La Trompette before going it alone, and readers are right behind his sterling efforts. Seasonal British ingredients are given classy Anglo-European treatment, from a ballottine of Loch Duart salmon with heritage beetroot vinaigrette and horseradish crème fraîche to roast to braised English veal with peas, smoked bacon, wild garlic and grilled new potatoes. Steaks are from dry-aged Hereford beef, while the ‘fish of the day’ might appear with prawn and basil tortellini, samphire and caper dressing. For afters, we like the sound of the sherry soufflé with sherry and raisin ice cream. Wines are well-chosen and the atmosphere’s “lovely” too.
