The Barbican Conference Centre unveils plans for a dramatic redevelopment

The Barbican Conference Centre has announced plans for the first stage of its long-anticipated redevelopment, with the initial phase set to be complete just in time for its 50th birthday.

A staple of London’s events scene, The Barbican first opened its doors back in 1982, taking the title of Europe’s largest arts and conference centre. Welcoming around two million visitors annually, it comes as no surprise that this venue has seen a fair bit of wear and tear over the years. So, 43 years after its opening, The Barbican has announced plans to revamp and restore the venue.

Public consultation is currently underway, with further stages expected to be unveiled later this year. Subject to approval, reconstruction will begin in 2027, with the first phase set for completion in 2032, just in time for The Barbican’s 50th anniversary.

The redevelopment aims to preserve the Centre's rich history and architectural legacy while modernising the venue to improve functionality and accessibility, upgrading building systems to meet net zero targets and making the space more resilient for future generations.

The City of London Corporation has invested £191 million into the project, with the remaining 20% of funding set to be raised by a major fundraising campaign. The first phase of the transformation will focus on three key areas: the Lakeside, Foyers, and Conservatory.

The Foyers will undergo restoration of its unique architecture, with careful attention given to the concrete columns and layered design. Underutilised areas will also be transformed to create more flexible and inclusive spaces, while improvements to lighting, doors, and lifts will enhance accessibility throughout the venue.

The Lakeside public space will be repaved to prevent water leakage, with upgrades to the venue’s famous fountains to aid passive cooling and help mitigate growing summer temperatures. This space will also see an increase in its biodiversity, as well as glazing enhancements to improve energy efficiency.

Meanwhile, The Barbican’s iconic Conservatory will be made fully accessible, allowing for extended opening hours and additional event opportunities.

Philippa Simpson, Director of Buildings and Renewal at the Barbican, said: ‘The Barbican has always been about Renewal, a beacon of an optimistic future in the wake of the Second World War. This project is rooted in the vision and ambition of its founders, to reimagine what an arts centre can be in the 21st century, a vital, creative space for everyone.'
