Louis Vuitton celebrates 130-year anniversary with Mayfair hotel pop-up

Luxury fashion house Louis Vuitton is marking a very specific 130-year anniversary with an immersive hotel-style pop-up in the heart of Mayfair. Opening on 24 April for two months, the Louis Vuitton hotel involves hospitality, retail, and exhibition spaces inspired by some of the brand’s most recognisable creations.

Founded in 1854 by luggage maker Louis Vuitton, the original Paris store - then named ‘Louis Vuitton Malletier’ - made its name producing durable, lightweight travel trunks. It’s flat-topped, stackable Trianon Canvas trunk kicked off something of a luggage revolution, responding to increased demand during the commercial railway boom and ocean liner era. Louis Vuitton has since become a global brand spanning fashion, luggage, clothing, jewellery, fragrance, accessories, and even beauty products.

What does the anniversary celebrate?

While the brand has been trading since 1854, the hotel pop-up celebrates another milestone altogether: the 130th anniversary of the house’s iconic monogram, created in 1896 by Georges Vuitton both as a tribute to his father, and as a means to combat counterfeits. The interlocking LV motif is now one of the most recognisable symbols in the realm of luxury fashion, an emblem of professional craftsmanship that’s endured the test of time.

Where is the Louis Vuitton hotel pop-up?

The location of the pop-up holds special significance for the fashion house. The original London store, which opened in 1885 on Oxford Street, marked the brand’s first-ever store outside of Paris, kicking off what would become a global empire. The modern flagship store now sits on New Bond Street, just around the corner from the hotel pop-up. Open from 24 April for a total of two months, you’ll find it at 28 Berkeley Square, within a red brick townhouse.

Like many venues in Mayfair, 28 Berkeley Square used to house Morton’s Club - an exclusive members’ club frequented by the Bentley brothers in the 1920s. More recently, during the 2000s and 2010s, it was a popular night scene spot favoured by Pippa Middleton, Lindsay Lohan and Jodie Kidd. It closed in 2021.

What to expect:

Throughout the hotel, visitors can expect immersive rooms dedicated to iconic Louis Vuitton designs and best-selling bags and luggage. There’s also a restaurant, a bar, plus a repair service. Naturally, ‘LV’ monograms crop up at every turn, from fireplace screens to framed newspaper advertisements.

  • The Keepall Lobby takes cues from the Keepall bag. First introduced in 1930, featuring a foldable design, the lobby design includes displays of travel accessories from passport sleeves to card holders. Plus, there’s a concierge to offer repairs and restoration services to any guests who might need it.
  • Cafe Alma sits on the first floor of the Louis Vuitton hotel. Inspired by the Alma handbag, first released in 1934, and the Art Deco movement that defined its era, Cafe Alma takes cues from Parisian restaurants. Open Monday to Saturday, it offers a signature two course dejeuner and an afternoon tea. Expect Champagne, monogrammed dishes, and playful British patisserie.
  • The Speedy Room is a suite-like installation celebrating the Speedy bag, famously associated with Audrey Hepburn. The space features a concealed ‘safe room’ showcasing the colourful Speedy P9 designs by Men’s Creative Director Pharrell Williams, plus a nearby vanity room highlighting the brand’s latest cosmetic range.
  • The Neverfull Gym references the classic leather tote bag known for its extreme strength and remarkable lightness. Weighing just 800 grams, it can handle up to 100 kilograms.
  • Bar Noe, on the lower ground floor, is an intimate Champagne bar. Designed at the request of a Champagne producer, it carries five bottles of bubbly. The bar itself leans into Prohibition-era intimacy and offers premium Champagnes and cocktails that take cues from Louis Vuitton’s legacy.
