How to plan a weekend wedding

Pick your format first. Friday to Sunday is the classic choice, but Saturday-to-Monday weddings give you a relaxed Sunday with everyone still around, and midweek two-day packages can open up more dates. Knowing the shape of the weekend makes it much easier to compare venues like for like.

Check exactly what the accommodation includes. Ask how many guests can stay, for how many nights, and whether rooms are part of the package or charged separately. Some venues sleep a dozen, others close to 100, so this will shape your guest list for each part of the weekend.

Plan every meal, not just the wedding breakfast. A welcome dinner, breakfasts and a farewell brunch all need organising. Venues with in-house catering or a set package take most of that off your plate.

Ask about set-up time. Arriving a day early gives you and your suppliers time to dress the venue without rushing, so check whether early access is included – some venues build it into their weekend hire.

Tell guests what’s optional. Make it clear on the invitations which events everyone is expected at and which are relaxed extras, so nobody feels obliged to commit to the whole weekend.
