For couples drawn to places with a sense of story and soul, Innes House in Scotland is a fascinating, historic wedding venue that offers style and substance. Dating back to 1640, this 17th-century Scottish manor sits at the heart of a vast estate of farmland, woodland and gardens, offering the kind of setting that feels cinematic without slipping into pastiche.
Innes House is offered on an exclusive-use basis, meaning that for the duration of your stay the house and grounds belong entirely to you and your guests. That sense of privacy is central to its appeal. Restored in the 1990s as a family home, the house feels lived-in and welcoming - more Highland retreat than formal castle, with history present but never overpowering.
As for the flow of your big day, ceremonies can take place in the walled garden, in one of the elegant reception rooms, or in the East Ballroom or Red Room, depending on guest numbers and the feel you’re after. The East Ballroom seats up to 80 guests for a ceremony and wedding breakfast, while larger celebrations can spill out into a marquee set within the Courtyard Rose Garden or further into the grounds, seamlessly connected to the house for easy movement between spaces.
What makes Innes House particularly special is the way the estate encourages a slower, more immersive celebration. Guests can arrive the day before, wander the woodland paths, gather for a pre-wedding dinner or share a whisky by the fire. On the day itself, champagne on the lawn and photographs beneath centuries-old oaks feel entirely natural. Afterwards, there’s space to keep the celebrations going or to retreat into quieter corners of the house.
Accommodation is thoughtfully woven into the experience. Twenty individually designed bedrooms sleep up to 38 guests, including a romantic honeymoon suite complete with an oak four-poster bed, private sitting room and generous en-suite. Additional self-catering cottages, gate house and farm house across the estate make it easy to extend the guest list without losing intimacy.
Located near Elgin, between the Moray Firth coast and the Cairngorms, Innes House also works beautifully as a destination wedding base. It’s less than an hour from Inverness and just over an hour from Aberdeen airport, yet feels a world away once you arrive.
