This buzzy new mini-Mexican grill and ‘cocteleria’ (cocktail bar) at hip Shoreditch haunt Catch promises to stuff you until you burst, should you desire. Order duck breast with chimichurri, pig’s cheek with crackling or veggie variants of the eponymous wrap, served street food-style on paper trays. Alternatively, pig out on Baja fish tacos with slaw, courgette flower and ricotta crêpes, plantain croquettes, scallop ceviche and crab cakes, plus sides of drunken beans and homespun guacamole. An ex-Purl bartender pours the drinks, but if you’re no amigo of agave, you may be thrown by the tequila-only list. However, it’s worth persevering because Mexican new-wave ideas such as pink Paloma (made with raspberries, Aperol and vanilla-salted grapefruit soda), turbo chelada (a cucumber and lime lagerita topped with thyme-salt foam) and death by julep should convert you to the tequila cause.

Mixed reviews of Rebel Society’s Death by Burrito in Shoreditch had me longing to explore the pop up Mexican grill & cocktail bar. On the hunt for a contemporary burrito that would blow my mind. Great service, orders were taken promptly and goods delivered just as quick. Short but sweet menu allowed snappy decisions – just the way I like it. Thumbs up to the house cocktail You Da Ho-Chata – Jose Cuervo with hints of cinnamon, cardamom and smoke. A less intense choice, Pink Paloma – raspberry and aperol charged with vanilla and grapefruit soda. This one was a bit too citrusy..where was the vanilla we had craved? Started with crab cakes and courgette flower and ricotta poblano crepes. Crab cakes were decent and the crispy toppings added that needed crunch, though my friend commented they were too fishy. This is an ‘affaire de goût’ of how fishy you like your fish? The courgette flower crepes were underwhelming, ended up piling the courgette pieces in my burrito. Overall bland dish, with an overpowering bitterness. Very large portions so these are meant for sharing. Afterall, there is a burrito coming your way. Unless you’re a 20 year old male post football that is, then these portions are perfect. And finally – the BURRITO. What we came here for. Smoked beef ribs & sweet potato burrito had my name all over it. Unlike traditional burritos filled with rice and topped with cheese, Death by Burrito has taken a lighter approach – no rice, no cheese. Focus is on the protein and flavours of the ingredients. Burritos are large and come with a side of nachos, home made guacamole & sour cream, large enough to be a meal in itself. The burrito was quite spicy and I appreciated the absence of rice and processed cheese. The beef was somewhat chewy and not enough sweet potato that I was expecting would add an earthier, lighter feel to the dish. This particular burrito was too meat heavy and left us feeling uncomfortably stuffed…we were too greedy in our ordering, too much grub for only two stomachs. Food aside, this is definitely a weekend type of place, dark venue and hip bar area. Our waiter claimed it’s packed on Fridays and Saturdays. Come for the drinks, music and comfort food. Then head upstairs and enjoy the club. Words of advice, try not to be greedy like us. Partying in a state of burrito-comatose not recommended. Located in the heart of Shoreditch, Death by Burrito all makes sense. Will I come back? To word this correctly…did this £9.50 contemporary burrito blow my mind? No, definitely not but will consider returning with a group of friends for cocktails and snacks.

Death by Burrito is in a small bar not far from Old Street. A man at the bar complained how much it had changed since he had first started coming there. That it never used to do food or have a pool table. The dining space is small or ‘intimate’ and dark – a nice cosy place to stop for a quick drink, but perhaps not Mexican. First we ordered cocktails which arrived in thimbles. Between the 2 different tequila based cocktails we tried they were equally undrinkable. For £6.50 you get a tiny glass with ice and a generous entire lime half and then somehow squeezed on top of this is a shot of tequila, a tiny amount of juices and, in mine, far too much salt. The food came to out table very quickly and the waitresses were friendly. The food itself was OK. And I by saying OK I mean when I pay £12 for a single Burrito I expect it to be a very very delicious Burrito. And by all means it was a nice Burrito, but I could have a nice burrito in Benitos Hat or Chipotle. The starters were mediocre and easily forgotten. So I thought perhaps it meant to be more about the experience… but there wasn't really one at all. I have been to Pop-ups before and I can forgive them for being slightly more expensive because it’s the ‘thing’ to do, kitchen space is expensive, the food is usually exceptionally delicious and the people are really passionate about what they are doing (Forza Win, The Seagrass). But here it just seemed a bit… flat. It wasn't a bad meal, I just would not recommend it to a friend and wouldn't ever go back. It was far too expensive and not nearly as delicious as the prices seem to indicate. Maybe I’m just too tight to afford a Hipster Mexican. I just hope that the sudden increase in pop-ups won’t saturate us with people who just can’t quite be a*sed.

I am a hungry person and the name of that place made me smile. I figure Death by Burrito wouldn't be a bad way to go (assuming it didn't involve indigestion) so when my friend booked it, I though I'd hijack the reservation and paid the first round of cocktails. Well… To start with the reservation was for 2 hours and yes they did remind us several times (two hours, 120 minutes, 1hoursx2). We had a look at the menu and ordered and it was fine. That's all I can say about it, it wasn't worth the hassle of booking a table, being squashed on an uncomfortable booth (our fault really, those only accommodate 4 and we were 5) and being made aware every time a waiter stopped by our table that our time was nearly up (did we look that bad ?). If I wanted to moan I'd say that my burrito was leaking badly. But Hey.

Do not eat here under any circumstances. 12 pounds for a very average burrito both in terms of flavour and size is a joke. The place is very old and badly needs a refurb. Avoid.

After hearing there was a new Mexican place opening up in the heart of Shoreditch I knew I had to check it out straight away. Arrived around 9pm on a Friday night and the place was heaving, but I was shown to a booth quickly (a few others behind me were not so fortunate.) My girlfriend and I ordered a few cocktails which came promptly, both of us agreed that the Pink Paloma was the overall winner. Our order was taken fairly prompty and the food came within 30 minutes, which given how packed the place was was by no means excessive. We were told there are no starters and mains, it's designed to come as a big piggy feasting sharefest and when the crab cakes, plantain croquettes, smoked beef rib burrito (mine), pulled pork burrito (hers), some very special looking guac, blue corn chips and more drinks on the side came I was extremely impressed. Everything was presented excellently, with a good balance between street food (throw away plates & greaseproof paper) and restaurant decoration (lots of tasty crispy and frilly bits over the small plates.) Both of us went nuts over the crab cakes, not a potato in sight just meaty spiced crab with a super fresh salsa. The croquettes were good too but a bit overshadowed by the crab. As for the burrito themselves, at first glance I though £12 was just slightly too much, but by the time we were finished we were well and truly defeated and needed to go lie down, that and the fact they tasted SO good, I'm starting to get where they're coming from. The beef was rich, fruit slightly earthy from the mole then balanced with crispy sweet potato and a sweet (but fairly hot!) salsa while the pork was just melt in your mouth decadence with crispy crackling nuggets. O, and the guac was a nice touch too. I was informed that the beef is smoked on the premises, the blue corn chips are hand cut and fried to order and all this 5 minutes from my flat?! we'll be back…
