SquareMeal Review of Blitz

What was once Kudos has been reborn as Blitz – Covent Garden’s latest mixed/gay bar. Dubious red and black decor defines the ground-floor lounge, where ‘exclusive’ cocktails such as blue lagoon, woo woo, nutty Russian and creamy alcopop ‘PS I love you’ are the thing. All-day dining is another attraction: reckon on £35 a head for dinner of sautéed king prawns in creamy tomato sauce, pan-fried beef in Sancerre with aubergine purée, chocolate fudge cake and a half-bottle of house wine. Downstairs, the vibe hots up as punters and go-go boys get high on Peroni and dance to commercial or underground house until 3am. Happy hour runs until 8pm and staff try to be cheerful. Forget edgy, alternative or innovative, this place is firmly pitched at the middle market – ‘dated’ is one word that springs to mind.
