SquareMeal Review of London Stock Mayfair

Silver Award

Mayfair is no stranger to a fine dining restaurant, so it seems the perfect choice for London Stock, which has upped sticks from Wandsworth to this more central location. With its intoxicating moody interiors, and formal but unfussy feel, it's an ideal candidate for a W1 postcode.

Opening in such a location comes with high expectations, but they’re certainly met here as far as presentation is concerned. Each plate is immaculately finished with swipes of puree and edible flowers, and made picture perfect before leaving the pass. As for flavour, you can expect the menu to be full of French flare with occasional Asian influences; and whilst some dishes packed a punch, we found that others didn’t quite make the impact we’d hoped for.

The four course menu dives straight into cured sea bream ceviche, a refreshing start to the meal that balances dashi, yuzu and kumquats without overpowering the delicate bream. Then menu starts at a gentle walk, then accelerates fast into langoustine, caviar and Champagne, then a rich, slow-braised lamb shoulder, coated in a glossy jus. The accompanying puree didn’t leave a lasting impression, but kale brought some welcome texture and the dish delivered on the promise of comforting, meaty flavour. A chocolate souffle ended the meal on a high, and delivered everything you’d expect from such a pud; light, airy and proudly protruding from its ramekin. To drink there’s an extensive wine list available and reasonably-priced wine flights, with help on hand to steer you in the right direction.

Although not perfect, there’s no denying that £60 a head for four courses is a steal, and we don’t doubt London Stock will be making its mark for years to come with everyone from corporate diners to those looking for some bang for their buck.

About

Foodies with their ear to the ground will have no doubt have already heard about London Stock, a smart, stylish restaurant sitting just steps away from Piccadilly Circus. The menu brings together modern European flavours with innovative global cooking techniques across a range of menus, including tasting, pre-theatre and set options.

In 2023, London Stock was awarded three AA Rosettes for its ultra-seasonal approach, after moving to Mayfair following three years in Wandsworth. With a change of location and a new set of accolades, there couldn't be a better time to check it out. It is the first restaurant from Le Cordon Bleu alumni Assem Abdel Hady and Andres Bernal, who have come together for this special venture. The kitchen is helmed by Chef Patron Sebastian Rast, supported by a team which boast experience across Michelin-starred restaurants such as HIDE and Schwitzer’s Hotel am Park.

The best way to get a feel for London Stock's menu is by taking a look at its esteemed eight courses. Kicking off with smoked burrata served with beetroot, pistachio and dark balsamic, this is followed by native lobster with Tom yum, bok choy and lime, as well as glazed rabbit leg with prunes, olive and almonds. Next up, there's delicious-sounding cherry tomato risotto with basil, parmesan and  white tomato foam, complemented by chalk stream trout with cucumber, buttermilk and dill and finished by barbecued beef fillet with black garlic, spiced carrot and mushroom.

Moving into desserts, and lucky diners are given the chance to taste calamansi with gin, lemongrass and kaffir leaves, followed by Granny Smith apple with buckwheat, walnuts and yogurt, which tops off the experience. In terms of drinks, expect an expertly curated selection of signature cocktails including the likes of the Bubbling Well with strawberry, Crème de Fraise des Bois and cava, alongside a wine flight and plenty of beers and spirits.
