Best restaurants in Sheffield

A cheap, cheerful and no-thrills menu are not typically the criteria for a ‘best restaurants’ list, but this proper old-school boozer has won a place in our hearts with its signature pies and homemade sausages.

Another little Sheffield gem, Tonco is open for everything from coffee and cake to dinner with a bottle of good wine, and it excels at all those things with generous, thoughtful small plates and friendly service. 

This long-standing Italian serves an extensive menu which blends trattoria classics with more modern propositions, as well as a few less well-known dishes. Whichever road you travel down, a satisfyingly full stomach is guaranteed.

Tucked away in an old Steel Quarter warehouse, Pina is beloved in Sheffield for cracking tacos and Margaritas. There's plenty more Mexican street food on offer (search out the excellent Pina al Carbon truck for more of the same) and enjoy lots of smokey tequilas and mezcals. A great spot for bottomless brunch too. 

Fiercely authentic and devoted to the delights of Sardinian cuisine, Domo wants you to experience a true Sardinian way of life, going to great lengths to import regional specialities. The restaurant itself is beautiful too - a lovely place to stop for aperitivo or a proper meal. 

An all-day cafe inside Sheffield’s largest museum, Ambulo serves up straight-forward seasonal dishes which will thrill everyone from little ones to their grandparents. A great idea for a family day out in the Steel City.

This family-run joint serves a modern British menu which takes sourcing seriously, using high quality and seasonal ingredients. The luxury touch even extends to bottomless brunch, where Wagyu bacon and lobster rolls complete the menu.

This magnificent Grade-II listed manor house is home to some classic white tablecloth fine dining, with great ingredients sourced and foraged from the local area. Indulge and then stay overnight in one of the lovely Edwardian bedrooms. 

Cosy, family-run Italian joint Maranello’s boasts a menu of crowd pleasing trattoria classics that feels like a warm hug, all at reasonable prices too. Plentiful vegetarian options and an extensive wine list are further draws.

This long-standing Sheffield Italian is as traditional as they come and includes a few regional specialities on the menu. The all-Italian wine list is a triumph, while 12-inch pizzas will thrill both young and old.

Glamorous as this Japanese haunt may be, it’s backed up by a no-nonsense menu of sushi, tempura and yakitori. Order some of everything and sip on Asian-style cocktails while posing for the inevitable Instagram pictures.

Doing exactly what it says on the tin, this lively joint serves British seafood and Yorkshire steaks and meats in a convivial setting. The early bird lunch deal is also a steal at under £20.

First opened in 1994, Rafters is as popular as ever. Choose from five- or seven-course tasting menus which champion local, seasonal ingredients at a price point that’s far from unreasonable for a fine dining restaurant.

Just eight miles from the bustling city centre, The Old Vicarage is a thing of beauty (especially in the summer months), with its beauty matched only by a menu of hyper-seasonal and locally sourced produce.

First opened in 1967, Ashoka has long been one of Sheffield’s favourite Indians. Head here and tuck into curries, biryanis and dishes cooked on a charcoal grill, all best washed down with bottles of beer.

Six and Half sits just off Sharrow Vale Road, where Leslie Buddington and team are busy cooking up modern, seasonal British fire cooking, carefully choosing wood varieties to match the ingredients. Menus change regularly, but have been known to include unique options like smoked almond-crusted lamb neck or barbecued carrot with jalapeño puree.

Brocco's easy going restaurant is just what the city needs, offering delicious dishes at any time of day in a lovely bright dining room. This is a restaurant that does small plates especially well at dinner, all at very reasonable prices.
