SquareMeal Review of
Grand Union Farringdon
In the heart of Smithfield’s party district, this branch of the Grand Union chain is one of the neighbourhood’s top late-night destinations. The ground-floor bar is done out like a cosy pub, but the real action is downstairs in the basement – an atmospheric space with lofty ceilings, exposed brick walls and GU’s trademark ‘Victorian boudoir’ trappings (mirrors, chandeliers, leather sofas, curios etc). Also note the neon signs and bookable VIP vaults hidden behind opulent curtains. The kitchen deals in ‘dirty diner’ food – think ribs, wings, fancy burgers, sharing plates, hot dogs, foot-wide pizzas and crinkle-cut cheesy fries. With DJs spinning the decks and busy bartenders crafting interesting drinks such as Key Lime Pie Martini or homemade basil lemonade with Tequila and jalapeño, the vibe quickly ramps up into party mode at weekends. Monthly ‘drag bingo’ (Wednesdays) is another reason to visit.
