SquareMeal Review of Pizza East Portobello

The Notting Hill incarnation of Pizza East's Shoreditch warehouse is a much more intimate affair than the original. A pseudo-industrial vibe still underpins proceedings, but floor-to-ceiling butchers' tiles, shabby-chic wood panelling and two roaring wood-fired ovens lend a more rustic feel to the place. The menu references California as well as Naples (Caesar salad, mac and cheese), although firm, chewy pizzas take star billing – the version with veal meatballs, prosciutto and cream is pure indulgence. Elsewhere, bone-marrow bruschetta is another decadent touch, while those after something lighter should consider monkfish with broad beans and tomatoes. The oven also delivers beef lasagne and slow-cooked pork belly with lentils, and those looking for a sweet hit should plump for the salted chocolate caramel tart. Reasonably priced wines come by the carafe, while service is friendly – if sometimes overrun.

A bit like a school dining room complete with school glasses, wooden chairs and school cuttlery but not a bad place for weekend brunch. The brunch menu is fairly limited and a little random (e.g. green eggs and ham / chilli avocado on toast) but be brave as the food actually tastes pretty good. Portions are a little on the small side but prices are reasonable and so my tip would be to order a few dishes for the table to share. P.S. If you don't want to be surrounded by children, avoid weekend lunchtimes.

The new pizzeria on Portobello Road is causing a stir. It's been packed out every day since opening. The only slow service (according to the waiter) is breakfast (served from 8am) We were told that garlic bread was ‘instantaneous’ however it took a while to arrive and when it did – it was burnt. Once this was pointed out to the waiter it was replaced in an instant and removed from the bill. Hence the marking of 9/10 for service. The pizzas were good – not outstanding. The lasagne was really good and the roasted meats and fish which were displayed openly infront of teh wood fire oven looked incredible. My husbands pork belly pizza had more pork on it than a city farm – he was positively oinking about it. I will be back.
