SquareMeal Review of Galvin Bistrot de Luxe

SquareMeal award hall of fame 1999-2018 logo badgeSquaremeal London Hot 100 2016The bistro kings (like normal kings, but with considerably more butter) continue to reign in Marylebone after more than 10 years. This is the Galvin brothers’ heartland and a happy hubbub resonates around the panelled dining room, where luxe issues from glowing lamps, smooth leather and, of course, “high class cuisine”. Readers love pulling up a bentwood chair at one of the close-packed tables for purist French dishes (escargots à la Bourguignon, steak tartare), but riches are also plundered from other cuisines: tomato salad comes with burrata, almonds, honey and lemon; creamy mushroom risotto is much admired; spiced Herdwick lamb could be paired with Persian aubergine and a spinach salad. Pudding might be a best-in-class tarte Tatin or – just the right side of the nursery – blueberry soufflé with rice pudding ice cream. The overriding focus is on good food and simple, elegant technique, which extends to “astonishingly good value” set menus and seriously feel-good Sunday lunches (roast black-leg chicken with all the trimmings, perhaps). “Great wine knowledge” supports a French-leaning list worth toasting.

Excellent food and service with a good wine selection. The gazpacho was very good and the beef was excellent. Service was discreet but very good.

I'm a huge fan of the Galvin brothers; I can honestly say that I've never had a bad experience at one of their restaurants...until last evening. Having been to Galvin Bistrot de Luxe many times, I know it to be reliably excellent in terms of food, service, ambiance and value. Last night was an exception and I'm gobsmacked; it was as if the restaurant had changed ownership. First, the service was really bad: it took forever to get a waiter to pay attention, three meals came out at least five minutes before the fourth (despite it being the same dish another member of the party had ordered, and, finally, when the waiter took the plates away and asked "how was your meal?", he walked away as a member of our party was trying to explain that we were disappointed. The only exception to the poor service was the woman who appeared to be in charge and was continually trying to pick up where the others left off; she as great. But it appeared as if the usual ratio of waiters to guests was drastically reduced and they were overwhelmed, although no one explained or excused the poor service. Again, an exception for a Galvin restaurant but one that is unforgiveable. Even more surprisingly, someone in the kitchen seems to have gone wild with the salt. Two of us ordered the asparagus veloute, which was gaspingly over-salted. Same issue with beetroot that accompanied the roast pork dish. To its credit, the restaurant made a deduction in our bill when we pointed it out, but that didn't really make up for the disappointment in the evening and in an old favourite.

We had a delicious roast black leg chicken with all the trimmings for Sunday lunch, can’t fault it (apart from asking for more gravy, but that’s just personal preference). I’m not usually a fan of bread sauce but theirs was really creamy with a hint of nutmeg. We were also given a complimentary amuse bouche - a choux bun filled with a superb chicken liver parfait, which went very well with a glass of champagne. Service was very good, we weren’t rushed at all and they noticed every time we needed a glass refill, which is always welcome – I do hate to sit with an empty glass. We will definitely will re-visit soon

My girlfriend and I dined at Galvin a few weeks back and had the most disappointing dining experience we can recall. We'd been attracted by their special truffle menu, so even managed to pay a premium for the experience! To our bewilderment we had to wait until the ice cream arrived to finally taste some truffle! There was none whatsoever in the starter, main or cheese which were all advertised with various truffle flavourings. We decided afterwards to complain to the restaurant via email, gave them a couple of weeks to respond and heard nothing back. For £150 I expected a lot more.

Went to Galvin Bistrot de Luxe for a festive lunch before Christmas with two colleagues. The restaurant was busy when we arrived, and in a few minutes we were taken to our table which was cramped at the back - the restaurant was probably trying to maximise their profits by adding extra tables in a tight space. We were offered set menus and brought a bread basket. 5 minutes later the drink order was taken at which point we asked for full menus. Both drinks and full menus came about 15 minutes later after a few reminders to several staff members. I appreciate it was busy, but that beings me back to my first point - why cram more tables if you can't handle it? When order was finally taken and drinks came we realised that the pretty seasonal table decorations of large pine cones, cinnamon sticks and clementines were unnecessary and taking too much space of a small square table meant for two but accommodating 3. The food was good I have to say - the terrine of duck and ham hock was coarse and went lovely with the toasted brioche. My main of wild mushroom risotto was nice and creamy but not overwhelming. I think the whole experience was a bit dampened by the slow inefficient service, and even the festive decorations and good food didn't lift it back up. Would give it another go, perhaps at a quieter time of the year.

A favourite place for us, we've been many times over the years. This Saturday dinner we both had the Galvin cure smoked salmon with blini and fromage blanc, which is a treat with a glass of Champagne. Then I had slow cooked beef cheek with a slick of creamed celeriac, celery, and sweet crunchy candied walnut which was very good. My other half had venison with quince, and while it was listed as being served with polenta the waiter had no trouble at all changing it for potato puree on request. The venison wasn't enjoyed quite as much, it had an odd squashy texture, but it had a good flavour and there was plenty to swop and share so we both enjoyed both dishes. After that the Baba au Rhum, crème Chantilly was calling to us - it turned out to be quite large, and was served with extra rum poured over at the table. The waitress did a good job in serving it nicely for the two of us to share. It is a busy place but we always find service to be pleasant and charming and the food enjoyable. Tables are close together, and our evening was slightly marred by the next table making a fuss and complaining about a dish - after having eaten it! That won't stop us going back though, it's still a pleasure to go there.

Had the prosecco lunch menu, which is both great value and lovely food. The mushroom risootto is delicious (had it twice in seven days!).

We had dinner for two on Saturday night. While pretty pricey, £80/head for 3 courses, house wine & coffee, it was a lovely evening. The food was delicious & service was delightful. I will definitely return!

I will keep this short - we all went to Galvin Bistrot to celebrate my mother's Birthday which was ruined when the Manager refused to amend the bill based on a starter I never had due to the fact I was misledl. We live locally and eat out most nights at well-known restaurants and the Manager was rude and called me a liar - this is the worst customer service I've ever experienced in any restaurant. I spent a fortune in there and will never come back. Friends we bumped into who were sitting at another table witnessed the commotion and said the Manager was completely out of order and as a result of this they won't be returning either

I took my mother to Galvin Bistrot de Luxe last night as my gift to celebrate her birthday. She very rarely comes up into London for dinner so was very excited even before we stepped on to Baker Street - the sort of excitement and anticipation that I find can only normally be met by disappointment. In short, this restaurant is fantastic. The staff were extremely polite and friendly, the food was absolutely brilliant (I can highly recommend the lobster salad - the delicate flavour of the lobster was matched perfectly with a tarragon cream, I can also recommend the Hare - one of the finest dishes I've eaten for a very long time!), and the ambience was also excellent; the restaurant was full to the brim of people having a laugh with their friends and significant others, a really great atmosphere. Anyway, back to my mother. She had the crab lasagne and the liver, and she absolutely loved both of them and had a really nice birthday, all thanks to the staff at Galvin! I will absolutely be going back, absolutely.
