If you've wandered the picturesque streets around Columbia Road and its famous flower market, you'll no doubt already know The Birdcage - a trendy, bottle-green pub perched at its end with great outdoor seating ideal for people watching, especially on a Sunday.
The building itself boasts period brickwork and glossy tiles covering the outside. Inside, the vibe is very much relaxed with easy seating, bar stools and no specific interior design details - it's more about grabbing a chair, ordering a drink and having fun.
It's not just about drinks, though. The Birdcage has a great food menu which works for lunch and dinner spanning a traditional three courses with nibbles for the table, too. To start, you might order some smaller plates such as Padrón peppers with smoked Maldon sea salt, alongside buttermilk marinated chicken tenders and hickory BBQ sauce, or halloumi fries with Louisiana hot sauce and lemon mayonnaise.
As for mains, there's plenty to choose from with a few vegan and vegetarian options, too. If you're really hungry, go for the Double smash burger with American cheese, house sauce, onions, pickles and skin-on fries, or if you're craving that burger satisfaction but fancy something a little different, the Kimchi fried chicken burger with lime and sesame slaw also sounds delicious. Pub classics are reimagined with the cider-battered North Sea haddock served with mushy peas, tartare sauce and triple cooked chips, and the Cumberland sausages are extra tasty served with buttered mash, spinach and beer onion gravy. As for dessert, you really can't go wrong with a sticky toffee pudding served with toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream, while the apple and berry crumble is a seasonal treat, served with vanilla custard.
