Suite spot: The Zetter Hotel, Clerkenwell
When we heard the trendy outpost of The Zetter Group had updated its top-floor suites, we just had to have a look – and a dip in the new alfresco bathtubs

We stayed
In one of the redesigned Rooftop Deluxe studios. Set across one open-plan room (345sq ft, to be pedantic), the space is compact, but cleverly so. The entrance is on a lower level to the main area, meaning that if room service comes knocking, anyone relaxing upstairs is out of sight – perfect for VIPs. On the same level is the bathroom: it’s noticeably small, but the raindance shower makes up for it. Upstairs is much more impressive. To the left, a seating area (and accompanying kitchen facilities) is distinctly Mad Men-esque while to the right sits a king-sized bed and work area. The best part though? The outdoor bathtub. Wrap-around, floor-to-ceiling windows open up onto the terrace where views of The Gherkin can be taken in while guests sink into a bubble bath – just remember to take your swimmers.

We ate
In the hotel’s ‘neighbourhood restaurant-style’ brasserie. Mid-century touches make it bang-on 2018, and the mix of bar seating, banquettes and intimate areas mean solo business travellers, groups and one-on-ones are all catered for. The menu is also a crowd pleaser, with dishes as pretty as they are classic. Chickpea fritters and jalapeno ketchup stand out from the sharing snacks, while the flame-grilled cornish mackerel with buttermilk, green apple and dill oil is clean and dangerously photogenic. It’s the Tamworth beef for two that actually draws strangers to our table for a look (and request for a review). If you’re in a group, this would go down well sharing-style.

We liked
The brands that have been incorporated into the suites’ decor and add-ons. Penguin classics, Wallace Sewell throws and Roberts Radios would make out-of-towners (and proud Brits) feel patriotic, and the Ren toiletries did not go unnoticed. There were some welcome elements of fun too which furthered the homely vibes: a Fujifilm Instax mini for taking polaroids; East London Liquor Company gin, rum and vodka for pre- or post-prandial cocktails; and Crate Brewery lagers – we sank those in the bath.
