Contributing writer

Beth is a freelance food writer and contributor at SquareMeal, where she supports the team across a range of content including news articles, website copy and restaurant reviews.

She is also the Food Editor for The Everyday Magazine - an online Bristol-based magazine - and produces her own Substack newsletter, called Small Plates, where she shares restaurant recommendations and conducts interviews with chefs and owners of independent restaurants.

As a Psychology graduate, becoming a food writer wasn’t always part of the plan. Initially led by her passion for her degree, Beth embarked on roles for the British Red Cross, the police and in a prison! However, the urge to see the world beckoned, and what started as a six-month backpacking trip turned into three years of travelling the globe. It was during this time that her fascination for food really flourished, as she explored the rich cultures and cuisines of numerous countries, from Mexico to Thailand, Peru to Australia.

In July 2023, Beth touched down in Melbourne with a backpack and every intention of only staying for a short stint. 18 months later, she’d taken on two hospitality roles to fill her time - a cafe job by day, and a role in a wine bar by night - having fallen in love with Australia’s vibrant culture and thriving food scene.

Stepping back into hospitality for the first time since graduating introduced her to some inspiring individuals, and afforded her some free time to practice her writing. She launched a Substack newsletter (initially subscribed to only by close friends and family) and later started interviewing chefs and restaurant owners as well as publishing work for local magazines. Beth has since returned to London to pursue a career in food full-time.

While she still keeps one hand in hospitality, in a front-of-house role at Islington wine bar Godet, most of her time is spent reviewing restaurants, dissecting London’s food scene and interviewing inspiring individuals in the industry.

Outside of work, Beth continues to travel as much as possible, and loves reading, festivals, reformer pilates and reality TV.
