There aren’t many places in London where dinner comes with sea legs, but Tamesis Dock is something special. Permanently moored on the Thames, this converted 1930s Dutch barge operates as a neighbourhood restaurant, bar and live music space, drawing in a vibrant, mixed crowd from nearby Vauxhall and beyond.
This is a great place to just hang out all day. The kitchen opens at midday and come afternoon, enjoying the first glass of wine as the river flows by is just heavenly. By evening, things pick up as the music hums in the background and the bar starts to fill up. The whole space takes on a sociable, slightly buoyant energy that feels distinctly different from your standard London restaurant.
Of course, the setting is a large part of the appeal. Outside, the deck offers uninterrupted views across the Thames where you can spot the London Eye upriver, the silhouette of the Houses of Parliament, and Battersea Power Station further along. It’s a rare vantage point, and one that pairs particularly well with a drink in hand, we think.
On the menu, you'll find smaller plates that are great for sharing to start, include samosa chaat and garlic flatbread, while the dosa section offers both a simple plain version and a richer chicken ghee roast Mangalorean curry. Pizzas are made fresh on board, spanning classic options like pepperoni to more playful combinations such as nduja with honey or a spicy halal chicken. A vegan marinara keeps things simple but totally hits the spot.
Dessert continues in the same easy-going spirit, from a Biscoff and chocolate flatbread to a warm brownie with ice cream, while drinks are equally accommodating, with a solid range of wines alongside whatever else suits the mood.
Tamesis Dock is open daily and is dog-friendly - which is good news for your furry friends. It also welcomes walk ins, but there's options for private dining, too, if of interest. In a nutshell, Tamesis Dock doesn’t try too hard. It doesn’t need to. Between the views, the atmosphere and the novelty of dining on the water, it's a must-try spot.
