Smoke Stack has been satisfying meat lovers in Edinburgh for over 20 years with their no-frills prime steaks. Located right in the heart of the city, Smoke Stack has firmly established itself as a carnivore’s paradise.
The aim here is to take top notch local produce and cook it simply. Don’t get it wrong; the focus on simplicity doesn’t mean any compromise in flavour. Smoke Stack is a proud member of the Scotch Beef Club and Sustainable Restaurant Association, in addition to being listed as one of the top steak restaurants in Edinburgh by The Scotsman.
Situated on the bustling Broughton Street only 10 minutes from the Edinburgh Playhouse theatre, Smoke Stack is the ideal location for a pre-theatre dinner, or a post shopping feed after browsing through the shops in the nearby St James Quarter.
Smoke Stack’s straightforward style lets the produce, sourced from John Gilmour butchers in East Lothian, speak for itself. The speciality here is barbequed meats; think succulent steaks and juicy burgers served with thick chips and green salads. Start off with some honey glazed goats cheese with sunflower seeds, or perhaps a chicken liver pate with chunky red onion marmalade and toast. Then choose between prime cuts of rump, sirloin, ribeye or fillet, accompanied by a range of sauces including blue cheese and whisky cream.
If the steak doesn’t catch your eye, there’s also a range of different mains. An Asian beef salad sees scotch steak served with a chilli soy glaze on a bed of mixed salad, while the haggis, neeps and tatties see a return to traditional Scottish flavours (and is also available as a vegetarian dish).
Keep the party going with some sweet treats. Indulge in brownies, banoffee or sticky toffee pudding, surprise yourself with the sweet of the day, or keep it traditional with some locally sourced ice cream and traditional cranachan with raspberries and whisky cream with honey and oatmeal.
