A converted 1930s garage in residential Stoke Newington provides the unlikely setting for this French-inspired neighbourhood favourite. Large concertina doors open on to the street in summer, encouraging punters to venture outside. Inside, all is dimly lit, cosy utilitarianism, with a large communal table and benches running alongside the open kitchen. Top-quality, seasonal ingredients are used to simple, stunning effect. A handful of daily dishes are written on the blackboard: perhaps a fresh, zesty plateful of squid, lemon, capers and parsley, or clams in a rich wine, garlic and parsley sauce – perfect for mopping up with sourdough. To follow, rare yet tender grouse with stuffing and a creamy bread sauce might provide a late-summer treat. All entries on the ever-changing wine list (also chalked up) are available by the glass. Nearby competition is sparse, so Primeur is frequently packed: it looks primed for success.

Primeur is a modern European neighbourhood restaurant in Highbury, set within a converted 1930s garage. Known for its seasonal menus and produce-led cooking, it works for everything from relaxed lunches to intimate dinners and food-led celebrations with friends, family or colleagues.

The former industrial space has been reworked into an elegant dining room. Neutral walls and simple wooden tables are offset by a striking line of mustard-yellow velvet seating along a central communal table, with matching vases adding subtle pops of colour throughout. A large blackboard lists the regularly changing dishes, reflecting the kitchen’s flexible, seasonal approach. Outdoor tables provide additional seating in warmer months for those looking to enjoy a spot of al fresco dining.

The menu centres on small and larger plates designed for sharing, drawing on French technique and wider European influences. Snacks include offerings like olives and bread with butter, alongside duck rillettes with cornichon and mustard or pig’s trotter nuggets with hot sauce. Dishes such as raw scallops, snail and celeriac mille-feuille with wild garlic sauce, black pudding with fried egg and pear mustard, chalk stream trout with Jerusalem artichoke, and pork belly with lentils, broccoli and salsa verde showcase a confident balance of flavour and texture. Desserts range from chocolate ganache with creme fraiche to creme caramel and sticky toffee pudding as well as a rotating selection of cheeses.

Wine plays a central role, with a curated list spanning sparkling wines and Champagne, alongside bottles from Burgundy, the Loire, Italy and other European regions. Whites, oranges, roses and reds are chosen to complement the evolving menu. Beer, non-alcoholic ale, soft drinks and after-dinner options such as dessert wine are also available.

Located within walking distance of the Emirates Stadium and close to Stoke Newington, the restaurant is also well placed for both relaxed post-match catchups as well as longer, celebratory evenings gathered around the table.

Stay away

Stay away if you need any kind of adjustments  to the dishes. The arrogant loser of a chef refused to cook the lamb sufficiently for a pregnant woman to safely eat it. We had to leave. Wait staff are lovely though.
