Situated in a secluded cove close to the ancient fishing village of Port Isaac (fans of TV’s Doc Martin take note), this privately run hotel, bar and restaurant makes the most of its calming waterfront location. Given the setting, it’s no surprise that local fish looms large on the seasonal menu – perhaps flamed mackerel fillet with smoked rillettes, samphire, pickled cucumber, seaweed and lime dressing, breaded hake with peas and triple-cooked chips or roast cod with Jersey royals, grilled asparagus, peas, curried Porthilly mussels and pickled shallots. Meat eaters might prefer a rib-eye steak or grilled free-range chicken breast with gnocchi, broad beans and hazelnut pesto, while sweet-toothed types get their fix from the likes of dark chocolate fondant with Mascarpone ice cream, lime curd, caramelised banana and peanuts. Nibbles and sandwiches shore up the pubby side of things – ideal with a pint of Cornish ale or something from the well-chosen wine list.
