Hot on the heels of his Bermondsey debut, José Pizarro’s City outlet is part of Broadgate Circle’s “egalitarian crescent of on-trend restaurants”. Dark brown chairs, “clean metallic lines” and slate-grey walls give the place a distinctly warm and relaxed vibe, while the menu mixes pitch-perfect renditions of the tapas classics with more “enterprising” contemporary ideas: we recommend the spicy chicken skewers, the house croquetas and the sugar-cured salmon with PX, lime mayo and capers, but don’t miss the carved-to-order jamón ibérico or the “close to perfect” octopus a la plancha. If something bigger is required, go for the “full-flavoured” rabbit stew, hake with green beans and dry sherry sauce or something veggie (perhaps a goats’ cheese pastry with parsley oil), before rounding off with apricots in cava or “fluffy” cinnamon fritters. With cracking breakfasts, lunches to go and an all-weather terrace figuring in the mix, José continues to impress the Square Mile.

Mini burgers a must and why had nobody told me until Ow about the torrone? Happy fatness in a pot. Only downside the terrible acoustic. Will be back

Good quality tapas
A good selection of tapas, we enjoyed the croquettas (blue cheese and ham), rabbit stew, chorizo tortilla, and pluma Iberico. With a salad and pan con tomate on the side, these dishes were full of flavour and authenticity. Follow that with rich chocolate pot with olive oil and salt, and light fluffy cinnamon fritters with plum compote, and you have an excellent dinner. Slightly odd to be going here on a Saturday evening, it's pretty quiet and empty in the City but we were deliberately avoiding the weekday suits. There was a rowdy table that dominated the restaurant but they left and then a bit later the tables filled up with Spanish people - what better recommendation could you have?

Different chef, similar problems
Broadgate Circle, just to the west of Liverpool Street station, has reinvented itself as a culinary hub. Gone is the late 80’s/ early 90’s feel of swanky City elitism (and the horrible concrete ice rink that used to be here) and in its stead, is a much more egalitarian crescent of on-trend restaurants, where diners can indulge in most cuisines from around the world. Into this mix comes José Pizarro’s third venture. He has established a solid reputation and is seen by many as one of the upcoming names within the world of modern Spanish food. The menu here combines elements of the traditional (think patatas bravas) with some much more enterprising options such as spicy chicken skewers and boquerones (anchovies) with salsa verde, for example. This all seems very fitting for the venue, which combines both these elements to in its décor, mixing clean metallic lines with the more authentic hams hanging above the bar. All very promising, but as ever, with tapas, I came away slightly disappointed. With very few exceptions (perhaps Brindisa or Barrafina), while some dishes were absolutely excellent, others were decidedly average. In the former category were the previously noted boquerones, delicate yet full of flavour, neither too salty nor too oily, with the salsa acting as a superb foil. Similarly, the octopus a la plancha (i.e. grilled) with a special chef’s sauce was close to perfect, with a clear emphasis being on drawing out the flavours of the dish and the quality of the produce. Some variations of this dish leave the diner with a sensation of eating rubber, but this was far from the case here. On the negative side, however, the pan con tomate was both too greasy and too salty, a far cry from the joyous experience of such a dish witnessed almost anywhere in Catalonia. Meanwhile, broad beans with chorizo and morcilla (black pudding) was lacklustre and saw a preponderance of the former at the expense of the latter. Overall, more good than bad and we also appreciated a good quality sherry (from an interesting list) and mostly friendly and efficient service. At around £30/head all-in, pricing is also very fair. My conclusion: if in the area and after decent enough Spanish food, then go, but don’t make the effort specifically.

Amazing New Addition to the City!
I was taken here for lunch for my birthday by a colleague, I had read about the restaurant and really wanted to test it out. I love the newly rejuvenated Broadgate Circle and this restaurant has a great location in it. On arrival we opted for a couple of long drinks and had the monkey 47 gin as I had been told it was very good; it was probably the best Gin & Tonic I have ever had, served with lemon peel and juniper berries. We did have to wait slightly longer than I like for them to take our drinks orders which let the service down a little, however this was made up for later when we were deciding what to order. The waitress was very knowledgeable and we basically ordered exactly what she told us to, maybe not all choices we would have decided on, but every dish was delicious (and for tapas surprisingly large)! I am never one to leave my food, but we actually ordered too much, and it was one of those occasions where I was trying to finish off as much as possible as it was so lovely! Especially lovely were the Padron peppers, prawn fritters, grilled octopus and tuna belly. The drinks menu was vast and impressive and we had a lovely priorat wine with our food; the final bill was quite steep however we had ordered a lot of food and expensive drinks so it was all relative. I would definitely visit here again and hopefully soon!

Right place in the wrong place
First the positives; the food is fab-u-lous. Standouts being the padron peppers, the croquetas (blue cheese and pumpkin on our visit - we were a bit hesitant but then ordered seconds as they were soooooo good) and the jamon iberico, which was a generous portion for the cost. The service is knowledgeable and efficient, perhaps a bit too brusque, but we put that down to staff appearing to be predominantly Spanish, and given that they steered us away from a random pick on the wine list to something that really hit the button, I'll take brusqueness! The gin tonicas are outstanding and if it were not for where it is located, I could see me return again and again if only for an end of day tipple and a few croquetas .... Broadgate Circle is now imbued with bars and restaurants all around its perimeter, with the central outside area effectively forming a large overspill drinking area for people who have not been able to get a table in any of the venues. We were there on a beautiful summer's evening so this area was absolutely rammed from our arrival just after 6pm until we left at 10pm. The noise levels are horrendous and coupled with muzak from inside many of the bars, you really struggle to hear yourself think, let alone follow your own party's conversation. It is a huge shame for a place like Pizarro, which whilst it should not be revered in hushed tones, it does need a bit more of an authentic and relaxed atmosphere to truly make the grade. Tapas and wine on a summer's evening should be a match made in heaven but think I'll leave Broadgate until the weather turns and instead now make a beeline for Pizzaro in Bermondsey........
