Engel and Jang is a restaurant, bar and live music space devised by restaurateur Des Gunewardena, housed at The Royal Exchange in the heart of the City of London. Gunewardena was previously chief executive of D&D London, the restaurant group behind Michelin-starred Angler, Le Pont de la Tour, Launceston Place and more.
Engel and Jang takes up residence on the north, south and east sides of the mezzanine level of the impressive 16th century neoclassical building. The restaurant also occupies a new outdoor terrace space which is perched out in front of the Royal Exchange.
Gunewardena’s restaurant is split into two venues. The first one, Engel, on the north and east side, is a Cabaret-inspired cocktail bar and performance space that takes inspiration from ‘1920s Berlin’ - the location of the famous film. As expected, the menu offers a high end revision of Austrian and German classics and serves guests throughout the day, and there will be twists on a range of classic and vintage cocktails, as well as live performances.
Meanwhile, Jang resides on the south side of the building, and offers something completely different. This is where highly regarded chef Dana Choi - previously of Seoul Bird and Judy Joo’s Mayfair restaurant Jinjuu) oversees a more intimate dining experience, serving a distinct, modern Korean and Japanese menu. With Jang, the team says it hopes to make Korean food ‘more widely enjoyed and appreciated in London.’
The menu is not yet available, but Engel and Jang’s location and team suggests that this new opening will provide luxury and theatre in spades.
