About Ember Brick Lane
The chef behind this small plates joint has an interesting history. Craig McAlpine took part in the original series of Channel 4’s Come Dine With Me way back in 2005, and the experience spurred him on to change career paths and become a private chef.
Following stints at The Yacht and Hotel Indigo, McAlpine is now overseeing this Brick Lane site, an intimate space featuring an open kitchen. Ember’s menu is split into Earth, Land and Sea, with many dishes coming from the grill.
Dishes you can expect to find include ember-baked celeriac hummus with olive oil, hazelnuts and kale, whisky-cured smoked salmon with celeriac and green apple remoulade, and slow-cooked pork belly served alongside smoked aubergine and a beetroot purée.
Several of the dishes are gluten-free too, while the drinks lists nods to McAlpine’s Scottish and South African roots via a selection of single malt whiskies and South African wines. On the weekends, you can enjoy brunch dishes which mix the savoury and sweet – think pea, rocket and new potato frittata or French toast topped with bacon and drizzled with maple syrup.
