The UK is a pretty diverse place, and with that comes a range of different cultures and ways of living. Nowadays the population of people who choose exclusively to eat halal meat is much higher and more and more restaurants are catching on to this and acting accordingly. According to a census done in 2021, nearly 30% of the population of Birmingham is Muslim, meaning a large majority of those are likely to eat halal meat only.
Take a look at the stats and it isn't surprising that restaurants are all trying to cater to dietary requirements, particularly halal diets, and Birmingham is home to more than most. There are lots of fantastic halal restaurants in Birmingham these days, but finding specific details of what meats are and aren't halal can still be surprisingly tricky - few restaurants are explicit on their websites, and you often have to go trawling around the internet for second hand information via reviews and message boards. There are helpful resources out there that keep track of halal restaurants, but information goes out of date quickly. So, we thought it best to roundup our own personal favourites, courtesy of SquareMeal's critics.
A word to the wise - we've included restaurants that have some form of halal offering, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're fully halal. Most of the restaurants on this list have a license to serve alcohol, which would mean they aren't strictly fully halal. Some others offer some meats halal but not others. Where possible we've tried to include all the necessary information so you can make an informed choice. The best course of action, as always, is to explicitly state that you're eating halal when you book, and contact the restaurant ahead of time to ask if they can cater for halal diets. You can always ask for copies of certificates in advance as well.
Without further ado, here's our guide to the best halal restaurants in Birmingham, from trendy Indian eateries to well-known steak houses.
