SquareMeal Review of
The Swan Bampton
Originally used as lodgings for the workers hired to enlarge the local church back in 1450, The Swan still trades on its reputation as Bampton’s oldest pub – although it has a lot more going for its these days. The old fireplace and bread oven are still intact, and the place now sports a swanky new solid oak bar dispensing Devon ales, continental beers and a decent assortment of wines. On the food front, expect modern pub grub and more besides, from small plates of Exe Valley potted trout or salt brisket with homemade piccalilli to steak and kidney pud, whole Brixham plaice with asparagus and lemon butter or spiced rump of Exmoor lamb with pea purée, spring vegetables and crispy bacon. Steaks and burgers are a good shout, while desserts could feature treacle tart or strawberry, sherry and pannacotta trifle. Sunday’s highlight is a traditional roast with meat from nearby Hill’s Farm.
