SquareMeal Review of Rose & Crown

It’s one of the oldest pubs in north London, but chef Gareth Thomas (who trained under Jean-Christophe Novelli & Gary Rhodes) has transformed the Grade II-listed building from drinking den to suave dining destination. There’s a cocktail bar at the front, though most of the murmuring couples & gossiping friends come for the Anglo-French food. Twice-baked goats’ cheese & thyme soufflé with buttered leeks & a walnut & honey dressing might be followed by lamb with smoked garlic mash, olive tapenade, basil pistou & red wine sauce. There are good-value set menus for weekday lunch & dinner, as well as brunch & roasts on Sundays. Original choices, a few fine vintages & half bottles make up the notable wine list. There have been complaints of casual service, but the Conran-trained lady in charge was utterly professional on our visit.

Went to the Rose & Crown after having ruled them out already a few years back, when the food was extremely basic. We decided to give them another go. We had an offer for 2 and took the children along. Our children ate 2 basic dishes whilst my wife and I were following the offer for 2 with the sparkling wine. It all started well… The place has been nicely refurbished and was empty (not always a good sign but we did not actually mind being in a quite environment). The food was very average and way below the way they would like to position themselves. Value for money for their dishes is disappointing. Despite being empty the service was bad, unfriendly and abrupt. They started off serving at the right pace but after some of the main courses we started to feel abandoned whilst the staff was busy chatting away in the back. Bringing it to their attention did not change the attitude. At the time of paying they TRIED to explain to me that the cheapest dishes were the ones on the offer regardless of who ate them. They also TRIED to apply the service and cover charge on the gross amount (e.g. the amount that would have been the bill if there had not been the offer for 2). This is just wrong and unacceptable. I do enjoy taking my family out and walking out upset even though I finally got the bill sorted the way it should have been. There are many alternatives to this place. I won't go back for a few more years.
