SquareMeal Review of Quantus Bar & Restaurant

Cosy and casual, with super-friendly staff and easy food, this Chiswick eatery also wins locals over with its bijou surrounds, exotic chandeliers and monochrome prints on exposed brick walls. The kitchen blends European and Latin influences for a seasonal line-up that might run from squid with chorizo, chilli and chickpeas or balsamic-glazed black figs with watercress, mint, Gorgonzola and pistachio to veal milanese, linguine with prawns or grilled rump of lamb with aubergine and chilli syrup, oregano and pomegranate. A few oriental influences also creep in from time to time (rare Szechuan tuna with nectarine, parsley and passion fruit), while desserts could include Sicilian polenta cake or chocolate and grapefruit mousse with crushed meringue and cherries. The food is backed by a decent slate of international wines including a noticeable South American contingent. In short, Quantus is a decent, grown-up prospect – and a bargain, to boot.

Chiswick is fortunate in its many good restaurants but the one that clicks successfully on all of he Square Meal stars is Quantus. It was brave to place itself on Devonshire Road, as it is competing with some traditional Chiswick stalwarts. However, Quantus has nothing to fear and every right to shout “vini, vidi, vinci”. The first thing that strikes you is how friendly everyone is and how much they enjoy being there (and I mean the staff. The diners cannot but be happy to be there). The maitre is amusing, our Portuguese waitress was very charming and as I struggled to try to see the menu with a candle an attractive lady appeared with a broad smile and a pen torch. Service remained at a calibre beyond friendly…we felt at home and this well-oiled machine of a restaurant served quickly, efficiently and as I am about to describe, deliciously. The food is outstanding. It is beautifully presented and delicious. The chef is a true master at combining the unusual to provide an outstanding taste sensation. The gnochhi that I had as a starter melted in my mouth and was superb. I had chicken breast with olives, capers, spring broccoli and yes, peanuts. The peanuts made all the difference, creating both a bit of “croustillant” and an arresting flavour in combination with everything else. A chocolate slice with pear puree could not have been better and, as a chocoholic, I am very demanding. The only quibble is the wine list as perhaps too many of the bottles are very expensive. However, we had a very good Argentine chardonnay (Las Manitas) that had both character and sufficient body to go with our dinner that was full of fascinating and rich flavours. Bravo!. My wife and I look forward to many repeat visits and we feel privileged to be neighbours to this fine restaurant. Congratulations and a warm thank you to all concerned, and may you long continue a part of the Chiswick culinary scene…
