As with Evans & Peel Detective Agency in Earl’s Court, E&P’s ‘pharmacy’ theatrics are merely a front for clandestine carousing. Done out like a dusty old chemist’s circa Doctor Finlay’s Casebook, this Chiswick offshoot is crammed to bursting with what looks like half of Boots’ back catalogue. You’ll need to make a prior appointment with a droll cove in a white lab coat and stethoscope, whose jiggery-pokery prescriptions and tinctures are dispensed by similarly bogus henchmen in a louche, darkly lit ‘consulting room’. Beneficial gargles range from Achromatic Manhattan (Irish poitín, Cocchi Americano, Riesling and quince bitters) to Professor Cornelius Ampleforth’s spiced rum and Kümmel sweet-and-sour Daiquiri. Any alcohol-induced side effects are best offset by stomach-lining toasted croques – perhaps pungent Cheddar and smoked pulled pork or mascarpone, Nutella and banana in brioche. Evans & Peel’s quaint 1930s quackery is a lot more fun than a consultation at your average local chemist’s.
