La Suite West

SquareMeal Review of La Suite West

Nestled in a row of Victorian townhouses not far from Hyde Park, La Suite West is the latest boutique venture from design goddess Anouska Hempel – a vision of stark Asian minimalism with swathes of black and white marble, sharp angles and sculptural forms. The in-house restaurant promotes ‘wellness’, thanks to an all-day menu of international dishes mostly inspired by Natasha Corrett of the Honestly Healthy brand (‘food with your body in mind’, says the blurb). You can eat in the snazzy contemporary dining room or relax on the landscaped private terrace amid meticulously pruned plants, trees and hedges – also recommended for cocktails and afternoon tea.

I was really excited to try this new concept restaurant. However the place was hugely disappointing. The place lacked any atmosphere, aside from one other set of diners we were the only people in the restaurant. The toilets hadn't been checked for a while and the mats had bits of old food stuck in them. The staff were pleasant enough, but did not know the menu or the dishes, and were unable to tell us what was gluten, wheat or vegan. There was no drink menu presented, and no fresh herbal tea (I was looking for Kombucha, Kefir, fresh juices) Disappointingly the 'raw afternoon tea' wasn't raw or gluten free. We opted for two main dishes, the Sushi and Courgette Noodles. Both were really bland, the pickle was the most exciting thing on the sushi plate. The pile of courgette spiral noodles in Pesto was flying solo on the plate, raw crackers or sprinkled with nuts or something else, this is more of a side dish than a main dish. Desert was better, shared platter of raw chocolate brownies, coconut ice-cream (staff unable to tell me what was in it - I guess cashew?), sprinkled with cocoa nibs, guava fruit and Goji berries. All in all really disappointed I was expecting really great things sensational tasting dishes. Head to Vantra, Inspiral or Wild Food Cafe if you want tasty raw vegan food, or even at home my meals have more taste than this. LA Suite I'd move on from claiming to be a great raw vegan place it isn't.

We had not realised that the food was all vegan and raw when we booked the table, but we ordered with interest, Vietnamese Gazpacho, Beetroot Falafels, Pumpkin souffle and Mango and Avocado Maki. All delicious. Mains were Aubergine and Butternut Squash Green Curry, Zucchine “Tagliatelle” and Penne Pasta with porcini mushroom. All enjoyed and washed down with exotic drinks(non alcoholic). Desserts and coffee also good. The bill was £195.75 for 5, within the estimated cost of £42/ head. Overall good healthy lunch!
