Imagine a designer deli in the heart of Milan, transplant it to a railway arch in hip east London, and you might come up with something like Il Cudega. This stylish urban eatery is the creation of two London Lombards, whose infectious enthusiasm for the food culture of their home region informs everything from morning coffee (brewed in a 1970s vintage machine) to the Franciacorta wine and salumi served at aperitivo hour. Open from 8am until 6pm (evenings are reserved for themed supper clubs), Il Cudega produces a short but effective menu of contemporary classics, for example a wonderful Gorgonzola and Delica pumpkin ‘lasagne’, vitello tonnato, or muscat grape trifle – along with such curiosities as Ligurian chickpea farinata and espresso with zabaione. Don’t, we urge you, leave without stocking up at the counter on cured meats and cheeses, the likes of which any Michelin-starred Italian would be proud to serve.
