Squaremeal Review of Hakkasan Hanway Place ?

“Wow, wow and wow!” exclaims a fan of Hakkasan, who reckons it’s definitely the “sexiest restaurant” he’s ever frequented. Certainly, there’s a “sultry charm” to this “sensual”, barely lit basement, with clubby VIP vibes, easy-on-the-eye staff and black-lacquered interiors making it “perfect for a hot date”. Kick off with Asian-inspired cocktails at the bar, then try definitive versions of takeaway classics and “impressive” ‘small eats’ such as jasmine tea-smoked ribs or “amazingly light” Shanghai dumplings boosted by chilli and vinegar. To follow, readers rave about the gigantic spicy prawns with asparagus, almonds, lily bulbs, spring onion and water chestnuts (“a riot of colourful tastes and textures”), but we’re hooked on the salt and pepper squid, the duck braised with truffle and the “riveting” crispy lamb salad with peanut dressing. No one escapes the top-end pricing, but readers agree that “you pay for what you get”. Multiple tasting menus can keep the bills in check, although the ambitious wine list might push them back up again. Either way, it’s “absolutely outstanding”.

Former Group Wine List of the Year

Hakkasan Group’s wine lists share the same innovative overall structure, with wines separated by quirky categories, like ‘new classics: genius without a château’, or ‘blends: the art of the winemaker’. All have a superlative range of wines, with a heartening willingness to go off the beaten track, as well as reassure diners with a strong selection of Burgundy. An object lesson in professionalism and imagination.

Unpretentious enjoyment

by   platinum reviewer (93)

Sep 2016

Editor's pick Once we’d become accustomed to the darkness of the dining room, it was possible to discern the care with which it has been laid out and decorated to hint cleverly at the style of cuisine and to make diners feel comfortable from every point of view. The front of house staff, surprisingly all non-Asian, were very professional and constantly on hand when needed. The Taste of Hakkasan menu looked very good value and we started with one of their special house cocktails, a concoction comprising Belvedere...

Dim Sum Sundays can't be beat!

by   gold reviewer (48)

Jul 2015

Editor's pick I fancied something different from the usual Sunday brunch, coupled with a craving for Dim Sum and it seems Hakkasan had the answer! Their set menu for £58 per head includes a pre meal cocktail, a bottle of Louis Roederer to share and a post meal cocktail, as well as 6 courses. We were utterly defeated by the food, to the point that I opted to forgo dessert. At which they promptly returned with 3 handmade macaroons for me to take with me. The food is delicious, the only complaint is...

Taste of Hakkasan menu - luxury without the price tag

by   gold reviewer (41)

May 2015

I've visited Hakkasan Mayfair once before, ordered from the main menu and loved the food, atmosphere and thought the service was decent enough. This was my first time at Hakkasan Hanway Place and we decided to sample the set menu. I have to agree with prior reviews, this is a seriously sexy venue, you really do feel quite special. I can honestly say that the Taste of Hakksan menu is the best set menu I've had anywhere in terms of taste, quality and price. You get a huge amount for £35,...

Sexy dim sum, and more

by   platinum reviewer (70)

Apr 2015

Even at lunchtime, Hakkasan feels raunchy. The entrance staircase is heady with incense, making way for a vast basement that’s all ebony screens, moody shadows and clubby booths. It would make a seriously saucy date destination, but clumsies beware - I walloped my head on the table’s low lighting twice, each time executed with an almighty clang. Not the dignified exit I was hoping for. Having to chase up the lunch menu was a minor bummer, particularly as we’d booked specifically for the £35...

Sunday Brunch at Hakkasan, always a safe choice

by   (1)

Feb 2015

The Sunday Brunch offer at Hakkasan is always as incredible as they come, and the quality of both food and service is top notch. The 6-course meal is delicious, and more than enough to satisfy even the most voracious of the appetites. The combination of champagne and cocktails works well with the food (we did order some white wine as well though, but then again we love our drinks!) and the whole experience is great. One of Sunday pearls of London!

Definitely not over-rated

by   bronze reviewer (8)

Oct 2014

So I entered here with some caution about the over-hyping and effusive comments I had read and heard. My Chinese friends all say it’s not a proper Chinese restaurant to the extent I sense it’s almost become now not cool to say you eat there. My co-eater once more was the ‘mandarin-fluent’ Miss C who, for background, breezed in 33 minutes late with no more than a vague hint of an insincere apology….but was reluctantly forgiven due to looking absolutely divine. A couple of cocktails at the bar...

Eat With Steph :: Eat With Steph: Hakkasan Hanway Place

Dim lit room, black square tables and wall panels highlighted with intricate swirls, and complimenting funky music is now the signature look of Hakkasan restaurants worldwide.
We all know my love for the restaurants within Hakkasan Group, notably HKK which is now headed by Chef Tong Chee Hwee, who brings his expertise over from Hakkasan.

Dancing In High Heels :: Dancing In High Heels: HAKKASAN HANWAY PLACE

After a day of pirouettes and grand jetés, we were definitely looking forward to our meal at Hakkasan. It has been a while since my first visit, which I remembered to be good, so I was excited to be back.
Tucked away in a quiet corner, Hakkasan Hanway Place is the original restaurant of Hakkasan that opened back in 2001, headed by Head Chef Tong Chee Hwee.

This Michelin-starred gem may initially seem rather obscure, but as you enter and walk down the stairs you will soon realize that it does have a special kind of feel to it.
Designed by Christian Liaigre, the interior is dimly lit, each table illuminated...

Dim Sum Sunday at Hakkasan Hanway Place My blog :: Connie Consumes Dim Sum Sunday at Hakkasan Hanway Place

I’m ashamed to admit that for a second year running, Chinese New Year has somehow managed to slip my radar! If a friend hadn’t asked me what I had planned for it, I wouldn’t have known it was just around the corner… while we’re at it, which charming animal are we celebrating again?! This is quite an embarrassing confession considering I’ve celebrated this for as long as I can remember.

The Critics Guide :: Hakkasan Hanway Place

Hakkasan on Hanway Street celebrates an ancient Chinese culinary ritual each Sunday, when they put on a special “Dim Sum Sundays” menu. The menu begins with a cocktail from their impressive cocktail selection followed by a half bottle of NV Perrier-Jouët Blason Brut Ros& to accompany your food, and concludes with a cocktail to enjoy with dessert.
