“Wow, wow and wow!” exclaims a fan of Hakkasan, who reckons it’s definitely the “sexiest restaurant” he’s ever frequented. Certainly, there’s a “sultry charm” to this “sensual”, barely lit basement, with clubby VIP vibes, easy-on-the-eye staff and black-lacquered interiors making it “perfect for a hot date”. Kick off with Asian-inspired cocktails at the bar, then try definitive versions of takeaway classics and “impressive” ‘small eats’ such as jasmine tea-smoked ribs or “amazingly light” Shanghai dumplings boosted by chilli and vinegar. To follow, readers rave about the gigantic spicy prawns with asparagus, almonds, lily bulbs, spring onion and water chestnuts (“a riot of colourful tastes and textures”), but we’re hooked on the salt and pepper squid, the duck braised with truffle and the “riveting” crispy lamb salad with peanut dressing. No one escapes the top-end pricing, but readers agree that “you pay for what you get”. Multiple tasting menus can keep the bills in check, although the ambitious wine list might push them back up again. Either way, it’s “absolutely outstanding”.
Hakkasan Group’s wine lists share the same innovative overall structure, with wines separated by quirky categories, like ‘new classics: genius without a château’, or ‘blends: the art of the winemaker’. All have a superlative range of wines, with a heartening willingness to go off the beaten track, as well as reassure diners with a strong selection of Burgundy. An object lesson in professionalism and imagination.

Designed by Christian Liaigre, Hakkasan's glamorous private room promises a unique experience for diners. With its oak lattice screens and luxurious fittings, the decor references Chinese history, tradition and architecture. The menu is designed for diners to share, and offers three courses that amply showcase the Michelin-starred restaurant's contemporary Cantonese cuisine.

Once we’d become accustomed to the darkness of the dining room, it was possible to discern the care with which it has been laid out and decorated to hint cleverly at the style of cuisine and to make diners feel comfortable from every point of view. The front of house staff, surprisingly all non-Asian, were very professional and constantly on hand when needed. The Taste of Hakkasan menu looked very good value and we started with one of their special house cocktails, a concoction comprising Belvedere vodka, Akashi-tai sake, lychee juice, lime, coconut and passion fruit which were mixed so as to produce a marvellously creamy, fruity introduction to the meal. The “small eats” to start were an impressive crispy pomelo spiced duck salad with pine nuts and shallots, and amazingly light chicken and prawn dumplings boosted but not overwhelmed by chilli and vinegar. We both chose the spicy prawn main, which was a colourful riot of tastes to accompany the gigantic curried prawns, including asparagus, almonds, lily bulbs, spring onion, and water chestnut - a beautifully and cleverly designed combination of textures as well. Our dessert was a perfect light variation on lemon tart with a sablé base for the sesame meringue, fresh lemon sorbet, white and black sesame seeds, candied lemon and white chocolate disks - a great way to end the meal. Altogether a very satisfyingly unpretentious and high quality dining experience.

Absolutely outstanding. Excellent in every field, food, service, ambiance.
It was also my husbands birthday and the staff were very complimentary.
