"I love the decor, the music and the ambience", raves one diner, while other fans are sold on the superbly curated wines and sexy Asian-themed cocktails at Hakkasan – pretty impressive for a sultry destination holed up in a low-lit basement off Tottenham Court Road. This Michelin-starred venue has been doling out VIP thrills since 2001, but it's still at the top of its game, mixing cool clubby vibes with "Chinese food at its absolute best". The kitchen has a peerless reputation for its "beautifully made" dim sum, but there are pleasures galore if you're prepared to shell out: top-dollar calls range from smoked beef ribs with jasmine tea or baby abalone salad in spicy plum dressing with Chinese chive flowers, yam and enoki mushrooms, to turbot steamed in a lotus leaf with spicy bean sauce. Elsewhere, big spenders order the Peking duck with beluga caviar. "Smooth" service puts everyone at their ease, and the whole trip is "worth every penny".
Hakkasan Group’s wine lists share the same innovative overall structure, with wines separated by quirky categories, like ‘new classics: genius without a château’, or ‘blends: the art of the winemaker’. All have a superlative range of wines, with a heartening willingness to go off the beaten track, as well as reassure diners with a strong selection of Burgundy. An object lesson in professionalism and imagination.

I’m ashamed to admit that for a second year running, Chinese New Year has somehow managed to slip my radar! If a friend hadn’t asked me what I had planned for it, I wouldn’t have known it was just around the corner… while we’re at it, which charming animal are we celebrating again?!
