SquareMeal Review of Chop Shop

A meaty offering from New York’s high-flying Altamarea Group, Chop Shop’s vibe channels the industrial look du jour, with heavy-duty metal lights, bare brickwork and reclaimed tiles, plus a feature wall embedded with ferocious-looking butcher’s knives and cleavers – although some of the expected Soho swagger has been toned down for London’s theatreland crowd. The menu kicks off with sharing riffs – think ‘jars’ (duck liver mousse with pear mostarda), ‘crocks’ (pulled pork sausage rolls) and ‘planks’ of cheese or cured meats. Italian/US themes also crop up in everything from cotechino Scotch eggs with salsa verde to Middle White pork loin with nectarines, as well as Gelupo gelati and affogato alongside peanut-butter sundae for dessert. Otherwise, expect a full crop of Creekstone USDA steaks, Cumbrian chops and burgers to go with beers, wines and cocktails. Staff are “incredibly friendly”.

A fantastic meat restaurant conveniently located near Oxford Circus, Chop Shop offers everything from well priced steaks to burgers, ribs and chicken. We went in a group and found the service prompt, but not in your face and nice and friendly. The steaks were a great standard for the price and even the pescatarian in the group found delight in the onion mousse and potted trout. The black and blue burger is legendary, and for good reason, and our sweet tooth was sated by the decadent banoffee sundae. I would be hard pressed to find a steak restaurant as good as this in the same area.

It appeared to be, and indeed, all the reviews read prior to booking, suggested this would be an all-American diner. As such, whilst we weren't expecting haute cuisine, we were certainly expecting good food served in plentiful portions......I regret to report that Chop Shop failed dismally on both fronts. Whilst the spicy chicken wings certainly packed a punch everything else we ordered was just so/so and the portion sizes very underwhelming - never a good sign to leave a restaurant hungry. Drinks are exorbitantly priced even for this part of town, and I struggle to understand why they offer a range of fine wines given the food offered. Definitely not one for the "must return" list.

Took a chance booking a table for 4 at 6pm last Tuesday for an early dinner. Found the staff really helpful and I appreciated the reminder call during the afternoon – just to confirm our booking. Our son and his friend ordered chicken wings and steaks which were tender and cooked medium; my own Barnsley Chop was excellent as was the seasonal asparagus which we ordered. Some unusual things on the menu included home-made pork crackling which my husband tried ,and crispy fried scotch eggs in herb sauce which I enjoyed. Service was speedy and the waitress assured us that we would finish in time for a dash to the Palace Theatre just next door. My husband – a beer drinker – liked the Weissbeer which they served- and I had a glass of the house red which was good. We were made to feel very welcome and enjoyed the experience so I would reccommend it. IThe street numbering is unusual – just head for the theatre!
