Borealis permanently closed in August 2019
Following the launch of Ekte Nordic Kitchen at the Bloomberg Arcade in early 2018, restaurateur Soren Jessen has now focused his efforts on this new site in Borough, housed within a co-working office space. Borealis features a ground-floor restaurant and a ‘café/to go’ area, which opens from 7am serving Danish pastries, coffee and a range of smørrebrød (Danish open sandwiches). The premises also contain a double-height ceilinged reception room and fifth-floor outdoor terrace, both of which are available for private functions.
The kitchen turns out classic Nordic fare, with dishes including smoked ox tongue with sea buckthorn and pickled beetroot, and crayfish soup with smoked seaweed and a beer vinegar mayonnaise. Veal and pork meatballs with mashed potato makes a comforting main course, while desserts see the likes of cinnamon bun ice cream with apple cider brandy, and Swedish chocolate cake served with whipped cream. From the bar, you can order Scandi-themed cocktails such as a Nordic Breeze, a Bloody Dane or a Nordic Cooler – or plump for something from the 50-bin wine list.
