Following Adam Handling’s departure in May 2016, Caxton Grill has entered a new era with the appointment of Alexander Boyd (formerly Mansion House) as its executive head chef. The restaurant offers a selection of quintessentially British cuisine using fresh, local ingredients cooked on the restaurant’s Josper grill. Looking for something meaty? Try a thick and juicy steak. For something a little lighter, the delicate Dover sole or organic Scottish salmon should do the trick, while a light-bites bar menu brims with crowd-pleasers like burrata cheese and plum tartar crisp breads. Equipped with a roof garden growing fruits, vegetables and herbs for the kitchen, there’s also an evergreen courtyard to gaze upon while sipping on a crisp Côtes du Rhône.

If you're in the UK and you're remotely interested in food then you probably watch Masterchef and you probably know of Adam Handling - the finalist on the last Masterchef Professionals. Only 24 years old and he is the head chef at Caxton Grill. Actually, he was a head chef at Esperante at the St Andrews Fairmont Hotel in 2011 when he was only 22. That's when I first met him, hell, he could've been head chef there at age 19 for all I know. Talk about a way to make you feel inadequate, right? 24 and his food is amazing. I'm just going to boast about him a bit more before I get onto my dining experience...

One day, I will enter Masterchef when my cooking skills are just maybe on par with the professional level. I love cooking, at the same time I love trying new restaurants and sampling and learning different cuisines. I don&t have talent like Adam Handling, he was a contestant on Masterchef: the Professionals. A show for the up and coming professionals showcasing their skills and pushing boundaries and flairs. Unlike me, I am just an amateur and love eating foremost.I never really got into watching the Masterchef: the Professionals, I am a sucker for the amateur version (and it is a better show). It was not until...

Chef Adam Handling is seriously inspiring. At 27, his portfolio of successes to date includes a fistful of “Chef of the Year” awards from industry leaders including the British Culinary Federation. His eponymous restaurant, located at St Ermin’s Hotel in Westminster has garnered three AA-rosettes in its first year. The restaurant may have had culinary nods from the greats but I feel it has yet to reach its absolute commercial potential. The place itself has a pleasant look, although the vibe is still very boutique-hotel-restaurant rather than restaurant-in-a-hotel (if that makes sense).

Caxton Grill sits comfortably inside the excellent St Ermin’s Hotel in London. The hotel itself is a great hotel with high standards, so The Caxton Grill has a lot to live up to. Fortunately is seems quite relaxed in doing so.Our evening began with cocktails in the bar. We had The Big Smoke and The Home Counties. The Big Smoke was a mixture of vodka, passion fruit puree and orange juice. The Home Counties was vodka with seasonal fruits. Both were very well mixed and tasted delicious.
