SquareMeal Review of Yen London

Bronze Award

This high-end Japanese (housed in luxury development 190 Strand) is the first sibling of the Paris restaurant of the same name, which opened in Saint-Germain back in 2000. Yen specialises in made-on-site soba noodles, offering a hot or cold option – we chose the hot, which combined velvety noodles with a warming, hearty broth. There’s more to Yen than noodles, though, from a seven-course tasting menu to an à la carte. Good calls include mixed tempura featuring puffy-battered aubergine and crispy prawns, delicate sushi rolls filled with the likes of tuna and mackerel and with just the right hit of wasabi, and flaky black cod marinated in Saikyo miso. Nothing out of the ordinary, then, and desserts are limited too, with Wagashi, fruit salad and sorbets on offer. An extensive saké collection impresses more, as do the sweet staff.

Modern, trendy, Parisien-owned Japanese restaurant where the food more than lives up to the surroundings. They are known for their soba noodles but it's the general quality of the ingredients, particularly the sushi and the whipped tofu, that really stand out. Service is impeccable.

Authentic Japanese food in London
I had a cold soba noodle with assorted tempura, which instantly took me straight to Japan. The tempura was crunchy and aromatic, while the soba noodle had the perfect texture and right amount of chewiness. The atmosphere was amazing and the decor was impeccable. A perfect spot to impress someone.
