Uli is the second coming of Michael Lim’s modern Asian restaurant featuring the food of the Chinese diaspora – from regional China through Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. The place originally opened in All Saints Road, but Lim retired three years ago leaving a loyal clientele bereft. Now he’s back, with partner Graham Rebak, and they’ve revamped the operation with a bright new identity and lighter cooking for the clean-eating generation. The joint is already rocking with fashionable locals. Its wide ground-floor space is decorated in Mediterranean colours of white, sand and sky-blue, plus energetic photos of dancers. Outside, a huge terrace stretches across the pavement with decked flooring and a handsome canopy. Food is carefully cooked, well-presented and delicious. Counter the punchy flavours of soft-shell crab in chilli sauce, Szechuan prawns, or dumplings in broth, with silky batons of aubergine in black-bean sauce, or minced pork with spicy green beans. There’s familiar crispy duck with pancakes on the menu, but also Malay lamb curry pimped with grated coconut and galangal. Steamed sea bass with ginger and garlic is expertly dissected at table by nimble waitresses. To drink, choose from an apposite list of wine, beer, saké, and posh coffee and tea.

This was one of the best meals I have had in ages, from the outside it does not look much, but once you get in is when the magic happens.
Every dish was made perfectly, full of flavour and hot, and a joy to eat.
The service was outstanding with all the staff being friendly and helpful from the moment we sat down.
we had a great night and the atmosphere was electric, buzzy, lively and fun.
Cannot wait to go again.

The addition of ULI to Notting Hill Gate has been fantastic! ULI is fab from start to finish. The design of the restaurant is beautiful; clean and fresh inside with simple table settings, eye catching art and lots of plants leading outside to the deck of warm wood and lush greenery; a space which is always cosy and warm.
The menu is all delicious; and even better it is all relatively healthy. Good news for those of us looking to dine out without the guilt! There are a number of ways to work through the menu; ordering lots of small sharing plates; as ULI recommend and have 4 courses (make sure you're hungry!), or the traditional "starter, main and pudding". I have so many favourites it's difficult to narrow them down to a "must have" list, if you took my recommendation you'd end up eating the whole menu. However, to start off with, I suggest the soft shell crab, the gyoza, the calamari and the lobster crackers. The whole steamed sea bass for sharing is AMAZING. As a chilli lover, my favourite mains include the szechuan prawns, the shredded beef and the green curry. The Singapore noodles are delish, along with the jasmine rice and the steamed broccoli as sides are the perfect accompaniment.
The wine list is great, with bottles to compliment every dish. You'll pay a little more, but the quality of the wines on this list are definitely worth it.
Overall, ULI is one of my favourite restaurants at the moment and I think it will be, for some time to come. We go so regularly that we now feel like part of the family, nothing that we, or any other guest could ask for is ever to much trouble for the ULI team.
