SquareMeal Review of The Rosebery at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park

Silver Award

There aren’t many more swish, sophisticated spots to settle in for scones than The Rosebery. The Mandarin Oriental isn’t any old place to enjoy tea and cake - this is one of London’s most prestigious hotels, a towering five-star monolith of grey stone sitting at the golden triangle of Hyde Park, Harrods, and Buckingham Palace. It doesn’t get much more London than that.

With thousands of well-heeled tourists passing through after a morning of Palace-viewing, a top-tier tea is a prerequisite. The Rosebery leans hard into the royal theme, but thankfully, there isn’t a tacky crown in sight. Instead, Executive Pastry Chef Emmanuel Bonneau delivers historic nods with precise patisserie.

The menu is a clever edible timeline. Queen Elizabeth II’s beloved chocolate biscuit cake is reimagined as a sleek tower of ganache, cherry gel, and marshmallow, all perched on a house-made biscuit. There’s a gorgeous choux bun of strawberries and cream - a picture of British summer. Even the Battenberg - originally a wedding tribute for Princess Victoria in 1884 - gets a glow-up. Gone is the jam, replaced by sharp raspberry gel and wrapped in a verdant, house-made pistachio marzipan. Because the team makes their own jams and nut pastes from scratch, they’ve dialed down the sugar levels; the result is a flavor profile where the ingredients actually come to the fore rather than just providing a glucose spike.

The rest of the package is equally polished: a smart plate of classic finger sandwiches (with refills available), and properly crumbly scones. The room itself, flooded with natural light from two massive street-side windows, is a stunner. Everything here is neat, precise, and deeply delicious - Instagram bait that tastes as good as it looks. It is undeniably one of London’s spendier afternoon teas, but if you’re looking for highest-quality execution in a room that feels like a million bucks, The Rosebery takes some beating.

About

Located in the heart of Knightsbridge, The Rosebery at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park offers an elegant and quintessentially British setting for afternoon tea, all-day dining and champagne cocktails. With its serene atmosphere, contemporary design and views across one of London’s most fashionable neighbourhoods, it’s the perfect spot to unwind in style.

The Rosebery is best known for its award-winning Afternoon Tea – a beautifully crafted experience that blends tradition with innovation. Served from whimsical hanging cake stands, the menu features a seasonal twist on the classic British ritual. Delicate sandwiches, freshly baked raisin and plain scones, and a selection of exquisite handmade pastries are paired with your choice from a bespoke collection of 29 loose-leaf teas. For those seeking something different, pairing options also include sparkling tea, wine, sake and even beer.

This season’s Royal Afternoon Tea is inspired by the heritage and ceremony of the British monarchy. This 'History of Royal-Tea' showcases tastes and traditions of royals past, reimagining their favourite sweets and savouries from across the centuries.

Sandwiches are elevated with British ingredients such as Aberdeen herb-marinated beef with celeriac and horseradish remoulade, Scottish smoked salmon with citrus, dill and trout caviar cream, and Clarence Court egg with black truffle. The experience continues with freshly-baked scones, and an artful pastry selection including 'The Queen’s Favorite Chocolate Biscuit Cake' - a digestive biscuit with chocolate ganache and cherry gel - or the 'Maid of Honour' tart - a nutmeg-baked custard with orange marmalade and ladyfinger sponge.

Guests can also enjoy a slice of cake from The Mandarin Cake Shop, either as part of the Afternoon Tea or beautifully boxed to take home. With everything handmade in-house by the hotel’s award-winning pastry team, the quality is second to none.

For those looking to gift the experience, The Rosebery also offers ‘Tea & Therapy’ – a luxurious pairing of afternoon tea with spa treatments at the hotel. Whether you’re stopping by for a glass of champagne, indulging in seasonal cakes or treating someone to a memorable afternoon, The Rosebery is a refined and delightful space that captures the essence of modern British hospitality.
