SquareMeal Review of The Ox Clapham

Clapham boasts its fair share of what could be termed ‘party pubs’, home to sticky floors and an entry fee past 10pm. The Ox is far from this: the traditional British boozer is a smart gastropub brought to Clapham’s bustling high street from the same team behind The Rose & Crown just up the road. The latter pulls a strong crowd with its modern British menus and mega Sunday roast offering, a formula they’re hoping to replicate to some degree at here.

The team has recruited design specialists Hadley Interiors to curate the space, combining familiar traditional pub features with contemporary finishes such as classic wood panelling, dark floor tiles, leather banquettes and a cosy mezzanine area. The main dining area is spacious and filled with natural light thanks to huge windows, but importantly, the space has been designed to house lots of cosy nooks and corners that allow for both sociable dining and more intimate dinners.

The pub group sources all its beef from its family farm in Scotland and dedicates a section of the menu to ‘farm to fork’ dishes. Testament to its quality is a blushing piece of dry-aged fillet steak that’s well-seasoned and meltingly soft, then served with baton-like, triple-cooked chips. A few things didn’t quite hit the mark, including an ox cheek toastie that smacked with flavour, but required heavier filling and a deeper level of char to amp up the indulgent factor. Our peppercorn sauce was also lacking in the key ingredient, although the steak was so good that it didn’t matter. We were also impressed by a twist on sticky toffee pudding, served with an intense stout toffee sauce and velvet-like clotted cream ice cream.

The menu reads very well – full of inspired ideas and exciting twists – and we have no doubt you’ll find something to fill a comfort food craving here. Bottles of wine start at £30, and you could get away with three courses for £45 a head if you forego steak for, say, its beef bourguignon pie or signature burger, both of which sound excellent.

About

Nestled in the heart of Clapham High Street, The Ox is the epitome of a modern gastropub, seamlessly blending traditional British charm with contemporary dining and Pan-Asian influences. With its thoughtfully curated decor and enticing menu, The Ox has swiftly become a go-to destination for both casual visits and special occasions.

The pub’s interior, crafted by Hadley Interiors, radiates warmth and sophistication. Rich wood paneling, dark floor tiles, and vintage furniture create a cosy yet upscale atmosphere. The layout offers versatile spaces for every need, including a bustling main bar, an intimate 30-cover mezzanine restaurant, a rooftop terrace with views of Clapham, and a snug private events area accommodating up to 55 guests.

The Ox’s culinary offerings celebrate the finest British ingredients, many sourced from the team’s family farms in Scotland. The menu focuses around the sort of comforting pub classics that make us feel warm and nostalgic. Highlights include the black pudding scotch egg with tarragon mayonnaise and the pulled pork sausage roll, alongside a house smash burger with rosemary fries, and a slow cooked curried lamb pie with saffron mash and tikka gravy. The “Farm to Fork” ethos is central, with ethically reared Scottish beef showcased in dishes such as the porterhouse steak and beef bourguignon pie.

Desserts are a nostalgic delight, from a Basque cheesecake with orange marmalade to a sticky toffee pudding draped in butterscotch sauce. Pair these indulgent plates with The Ox’s impressive drinks list, which features expertly crafted cocktails, local craft beers, and a carefully chosen wine selection.

With its inviting ambience, diverse menu, and dedication to quality, The Ox manages to stand out in the highly competitive and crowded Clapham pub scene, fusing both tradition and modernity into a winning combination.
