About The Idle Hour - Railway Side

SquareMeal Review

Among the myriad clocks that serve as decoration at this quaint little pub, there’s one, apparently, that tells the right time – but we’ve never found it. Staff, though, always make time for customers who simply want to pop in for a pint of real ale or a glass of organic wine, despite the importance this gastropub gives to good food. The menu contains much that is fashionable – from minted lamb with bulgur wheat & pomegranate salad, to sea bass with steamed clams – but more popular, it seems, are the burgers (half price on Mondays) with goose-fat fries. Spend an idle summer hour in the garden here & it’s easy to forget about the pulsating metropolis outside.

Hidden gem worth finding
04 August 2013
Was recommended to visit the Idle Hour by a friend who used to live in Barnes so headed there on Saturday afternoon. The pub is a little hard to find but it was worth the effort for the lovely beer garden at all. Rather than a pub it feels more like being at home, it's a very cosy pub with extremely friendly staff. My friend opted for the burger which smelt delicious and I had the vegetarian pasta dish which tasted great. The menu is small but well thought out and perfect for the size of the pub. The garden is great to catch some sun and have a few more beers after lunch. Will definitely return again when I'm next in Barnes, a great independent pub which I'd recommend to anyone.

We took friends who were visiting from Cornwall here for dinner on a Sunday evening. There was a bit of a wait to order, despite the place not being very busy, and once we finally had ordered we waited an hour for three burgers and a chicken dish to arrive. During that time we were told twice, at fifteen minute intervals, that it would just be another five minutes. When the food finally arrived, the chicken was overcooked and dry, and all three burgers were essentially raw. One of our group took their burger up and let the staff know all three were underdone; no one came to take the other two burgers, so after another five minutes we took the other two up. Someone who I presume was the manager then came up and said that they looked fine to him and were cooked “medium”. We pointed out that they were cold in the middle, and this elicited a mealy-mouthed “I'm sorry you feel that way.” He refused to apologise despite our calling him on this, and interestingly as we left the table next to us mentioned they'd also had to send their food back as the burgers had been raw. The last time I ate here I had the burger and it was good; this time the terrible food was compounded by the inability of the guy who came over to acknowledge the food had been unacceptable. There are plenty of good pubs to eat at in Barnes: after tonight's experience i'll be taking people to one of them next time.

Sunday lunch – one staff member / 28 customers and a chef that has lost interest in cooking! Chicken was served raw and this was the third time I had been served undercooked food at the Idle Hour. Probably won't revisit now despite convenient location. Pity

Have eaten here many times. Service is apauling. The last 3rd meal a special allergy request was missed! The second reservation was missed and we missed out on Sunday dinner! Yeaterday i reserved 5 sunday dinners, today i phoned to check all ok and was informed they had only placed our booking for two people and that they had accidentally sold our sunday dinners! The lady was not concerned… HOW do you get it SO WRONG? Sad to say, We are NOT eatin here again.
