From the Artist Residence portfolio (which also runs boutique hotels in Oxford, Brighton and London), this smokehouse, bar and restaurant-with-rooms occupies a 16th-century coaching inn. Its interior sports bare wooden boards on walls and floors, and equally rustic bench seating – an ideal venue to sample Cornish ales and ciders. Local produce also features in the restaurant, where armchairs and a log burner produce a country drawing-room effect. Breakfast might be spinach and Cornish blue cheese with scrambled eggs, though Saturday brunch brings the likes of smoked haddock kedgeree into play. Salads and posh burgers (falafel and halloumi, buttermilk chicken and avocado) dominate lunch, while dinner might start with Middle Eastern spiced scallops, before home-smoked barbecue belly-pork ribs.
