SquareMeal Review of The Brasserie at The Cumberland

To find this business-friendly Brasserie, you need to traverse the ultra-modern lobby of the Cumberland hotel. Once inside, expect plenty of designer features including a wood-slatted ceiling, oversized candelabras and a chilled Ibiza soundtrack – making the place well suited to corporate get-togethers. Following the recent departure of Gary Rhodes, the kitchen has shrugged off most of its British influences and it now delivering broadly based European cooking. Grills, pastas and risottos sit alongside the likes of coquilles St Jacques, cured meats with Provençal vegetable salad or confit duck with braised red cabbage, cranberries and star-anise jus. To finish, try chocolate and coffee pot with salted caramel, milk foam and chocolate sorbet or wait 15 minutes for a fruity soufflé. ‘Wines of the season’ are good-value alternatives to the well-spread international list, which offers plenty by the glass.

I had the unfortunate experience of eating at the Rhodes W1 Brasserie last night and I'm sorry to say I found it seriously over rated. Bearing in mind this was a Monday night and the restaurant was virtually empty we initially had to endure the whole “we'll see if we have a table” charade. When they did manage to fit us into their soulless restaurant the service was so painfully slow it took 3 hours to have a very disappointing steak with reasonably nice chips which failed to arrive. That is until one of the ignorant waiting staff finally found the time in their obviously deadly quiet evening to speak to us ten minutes into the mains, despite being reminded upon bringing the mains that chips had also been ordered. The cheese platter was average, again nothing special. The only saving grace was the wine & I can only assume that is because it's not produced by the restaurant. All in all a very disappointing experience, and at £60 a head very poor value for the quality of service & food. I'm afraid this experience will definitely make me think twice before eating at a Gary Rhodes restaurant again.

Although the food is undoubtedly well sourced and well cooked, the menu lacks inspiration and the setting is disappointing. Staff try to make up for it but nothing can hide that you're paying well over the odds for food that is better cooked, cheaper and served in nicer restaurants in any Chez Gerrard or Auberge. Wouldn't really recommend this because there are so many better options.
