SquareMeal Review of Royal China - Westferry Circus

Silver Award

"Perfect views of the Thames" are a given at this branch of the Royal China chain, which occupies a prime site facing a wide sweep of the river: with the Thames Ferry Pier next door, they've also put the terrace to good use. The group is famed for its tip-top, "extremely well-priced" dim sum, so be ready to work your way through exemplary steamed pork and radish dumplings, stuffed beancurd rolls, honey-roast pork puffs and a splendid rice pot of spicy chicken's feet and spare ribs. At teatime, the kitchen switches to a fancier menu of Hong Kong-style food, complete with helpful photographs. Cantonese classics such as crispy aromatic duck and lobster with ginger and spring onion line up alongside lemon chicken, stir-fried Dover sole with spicy salt or stewed pork belly with preserved cabbage. "Excellent service" makes the grade too.

A quick midweek dimsum fix
08 February 2016
Royal China, Canary Wharf Riverside – a quick midweek dimsum fix. crispy noodles with chicken £9.50 – the noodles had a good crunch, not undercooked, and the gravy sauce not too strachy or salty. Just the perfect balance with an assortment of crunchy vegetables. roast pork buns £3.50 – quite a meagre filling but I liked the bao. Soft, fluffy and steaming hot. Yummy! turnip cake with cured meat £3.50 – not a good texture. Looked good but failed to deliver in taste and the texture was mushy and felt wrong. fried yam paste meat dumplings £3.50 – my favourite dim sum! The pastry was a little too oily and filling, too salty. Not pleasant. honey roast pork puff £3.50 – another must order dish for me at my dim sum outings. Nice! shanghai pork dumplings £3.50 – the pastry was quite thin and the soup in the dumpling was flavoursome. Pretty much average. plain chee cheung fun with peanut sauce £3.80 – I am always glad to try new variety of dim sums offered and I felt quite western when ordering this fusion dish. Well, I can say that I am definitely not ordering this dish again. The chee cheung fun alone also had a very funny texture – mushy, felt as though the proportion of flour was wrong or a substandard rice flour was used.

having heard and read about this restaurant i visited with my family. i was first impressed with the views over the Thames and the curteous staff , who having taken my name down wrong on the booking, showed me to my table. A pleasant window overlooking the Thames. If i had been shown there during a hot busy period i think i would have asked to move as the outside seating area (closed) was too close to my window. That said , staff were very polite and took our order correctly. When the food started to arrive i was impressed with the speed and the pork buns were very nice, if a little small, but thereafter the food came out balanced between warm and cold. We had one more hot dish but on the whole really tepid. I could not fault the service (even though they add 13% gratuities on the bill) but the food was at best average.

I love dimsum and the Royal China chain is pretty much the best of the best in London. Their Canary Wharf site is probably my favourite just because of the views and the fact you can sit outside on a sunny day. The dimsum itself is wonderful, perfectly steamed fat parcels of prawns and scallops. The charsiu buns were fantastic with plenty of filling and a light dough and the fried noodles are always lovely in flavour and not overly greasy. This is the perfect lunch spot for a group of girls having a catch up. The atmosphere is buzzy and noisy with the sound of people enjoying themselves without any pretentiousness. Service is typically Chinese, in that it is brisk and functional without any subtlety or refinement. It isn't Hakkasan in style nor does it pretend to be. Instead Royal China just serves brilliant food in a lovely setting and it does this well.
