SquareMeal Review of Rabot 1745

Bronze Award

The notion of a chocolate-filled menu might seem gimmicky, but the team behind Hotel Chocolat mostly pull it off, reimagining a Saint Lucian house where roasted cacao dominates the food and cocktail lists. The look is colonial yet modern, with both floors (ground and first) decorated in warm cocoa colours. We sat on the upstairs balcony with pleasing views over Borough Market. A giant Yorkshire pudding filled with cacao-glazed pulled pork and white-chocolate mash epitomised comfort food; we also enjoyed the gloriously rich potted shrimps in spiced cacao butter. A well-balanced dish of cacao-crusted pork cutlet, with crackling, in a garden-mint cacao sauce followed, yet we were unconvinced by the dipping sauces (chocolate balsamic, cacao pesto, and nib butter) accompanying the fries. As expected, molten chocolate lava pudding, with gooey centre, was a highlight. We left choc-full, melted by “efficient and friendly” service and a Rabot Rum Sour cocktail.

Food is always excellent and I really enjoy the quirkiness of the dishes using cocoa beans and/or chocolate as part of the ingredients. Their White Chocolate mashed potato is just divine. Service is good and I love the vibe of their balcony seating overlooking the hub of Borough Market. This is a reasonably priced restaurant too and a must for foodies and chocolate lovers :).

Clever, innovative meals that make the most of the cocoa theme. Downstairs there is a relaxed cafe vibe and upstairs a cool restaurant that overlooks BOROUGH MARKET.

Delicious twist on old favourites. Friendly laid back staff, relaxed enough for a night out with friends, but also great for a business meal.

Good food with a difference
Chose Rabot 1745 for dinner with foodie friends, as somethnin different. Not disappointed. I wouldn't rave over the white chocolate mash, and my cheesecake was mediocre, but everything else we tried was superb. Especially the sauces. Between us we had risotto, market fish of the day, chicken, cheesecake, the triad of chocolate mouse and flourless almond cake. With mash, spinach and fries. The three dipping sauces with the fries particularly good. Food was beautifully presented, staff attentive but unobtrusive. With a small carafe of rose and tea, total bill £125 for 3 including service automatically added. This was a Wednesday night, on the terrace, but after the market had closed for the day. I imagine it would be much better on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday evening, or any lunchtime. Light rugs thoughtfully provided in case the evening was cool, comfortable seating with decent distance from the next table. The only problem with the location is being right beside the railway and trains rumbling in and out of London Bridge station make conversation difficult sometimes. - shouldn't have chosen a table on that side of the terrace perhaps. Also given a 20% discount card for any chocolate shopping that evening.

Highly recommended
My regular "go to" place for most occasions. Food is innovative, excellent and great value for money. The service is efficient and friendly and the ambiance is great - relaxed for dinner with friends, classy enough for business lunches or dinners.

An amazing dining experience with superb food – with a very unusual theme! This restaurant is quite different to anything else I've tried – which is hard to come by as I've eaten in many of London's finest establishments. The waiter was helpful and knowledgeable about the menu, the selection of wine was great and you can buy by the Carafe or bottle which gives you a range of options. We started with a selection of bread served with pesto, butter and cocoa and balsamic dip. The dip messed with my head a bit as it looked like liquid milk chocolate but tasted of balsamic it was lovely. I had the monkfish for main which was beautifully presented with white chocolate mash which was divine and the perfect accompaniment. My guest had the risotto which disappeared from the plate swiftly with no complaints. The service was slow or some would say leisurely and relaxing as my guest was 45 minutes late I didn't have the luxury of a leisurely lunch so not entirely their fault. The desert recommendation was the Bafta desert which didn't disappoint, light and flavoursome a perfect blend of chocolate delights. So this cocoa-centric restaurant is a must for people who can think outside the chocolate box, as it's cocoa bean with everything but the only hint of chocolate was in the desert. So go on, give it a try if you have deep pockets £100 inc service and wine. I will definitely be going back.
