Lobos ('wolves' in Spanish) is a new tapas joint in the heart of Borough Market, created by a team who met while working at renowned Spanish food group, Brindisa. Situated in a cramped railway arch, its two storeys manage to incorporate a bar (with views out to the market), kitchen and cave-like dining area. Our tip: grab a cosy mini booth for two and start with the pan con tomate, and ham, chorizo and smoked bacon croquetas. The menu has a clear emphasis on meat (mostly sourced from Borough Market); we sampled a rib-eye topped with exquisite foie gras, a rack of lamb with a herbaceous crust and a gloriously fatty secreto ibérico (the hidden cut between the pig's shoulder and loin) with homemade crisps. A generous selection of cava and sherries also helps make Lobos a fun addition to London's ever-growing list of on-the-money tapas venues.

I met a friend here for lunch, the second time we have visited. Very friendly staff and we weren't at all rushed. We shared 5 tapas, and that was plenty as we were really full! Meatballs, patatas bravas, croquettas, manchego and quince, and rice with chorizo...all tasty, and the great thing was that the staff only brought one or two at a time, so the food didn't get cold. All very enjoyable.

My friends and I had an early pre-theatre tapas meal last night. When I arrived we were shown to our table promptly. The menu is varied and changes regularly. The focus is on meat but as a vegetarian I found there were enough meat free dishes for me to order that I could also share with my friends. They tucked into the meat dishes and said they were delicious - winners were the croquets and the rack of lamb. The green salad was very interesting with a lemon and nut dressing and the tortilla perfectly cooked. The dishes are all served on different interesting plates that turn up when they are cooked rather than all together. The waitress recommended 3 each, which was about right. They were small but the food is rich so you don't need too much. The wine was delicious and the service friendly but very efficient. Don't skimp on the desserts, it was the best I've had in a while - chocolate and pistachio cake with chocolate and hazelnut icecream. Very good! The bill came to just under £200 for 4 of us and included 2 bottles of wine. The atmosphere was buzzy and fun. It is set in a railway arch so I thought would feel cramped but there was enough room to move between tables. I loved the fact I could book as at Brindisa down the road they don't take bookings which is a problem for an organisation freak like me!

Not being a Spanish-speaker, I initially thought that "Lobos" may have meant "small" such is the size of this place. Somehow we managed not to overlook its entrance, being somewhat inconspicuously located underneath the railway arch on London Bridge, and fell into a very dimly lit narrow interior. We were whisked upstairs where our pre-booked table of four had been cobbled together by placing a fold up table and two rickety chairs alongside one of the booths for two (for two small people I hasten to add!) There really was not enough room to swing the proverbial moggy, let alone the vast collection of glasses, bottles, plates not to mention food that we then dealt with over the next 90 minutes or so. I fully expect tapas to be informal and relaxed, but we spent most of the time in a constant state of discomfort, juggling all the items on the table and avoiding passing staff waiting on the tables behind us. The menu is as stated, "meat and tapas" but it is worth either swatting up on the menu before going or take some form of portable lighting, as it is nigh on impossible to read in the dimness! Stand outs for us were the croquetas, the seafood dish and the chuleton but everything else was just ok and did not live up to the promise and prices charged. Given that you order tapas to share, we thought £4 for around 6 martini olives and £2.50 for 6 small slices of bread was a bit steep, even for Central London. Based on recent experiences, I'm beginning to think that tapas may be a dish best served in Espana.....
