We trust you've heard of Pieminister - the independent pie-focused pop-up started in Bristol in 2003 after two best friends came home from their travels and decided that, after living on a diet of pies themselves, it was time to reinvest in the humble British pie.
And that they did; crispy pastry, pleasingly squelchy fillings and interesting flavours, word soon spread and 20 years later there's now 16 restaurants around the UK. The Nottingham branch sits conveniently in the city centre, close to many of the town's most notable historical sites. Just moments away there's Nottingham Castle, the Robin Hood statue and Hockley, the creative quatre, all good for walking off the bloat when you've stuffed your pie-hole.
The menu is similar to many of the other branches, offering a mix of small plates, weekly deals, sides, gravy fondue and, of course, lots of pies. Starting with the main event, expect to see the likes of the Free Ranger with free range British chicken, ham, leek and thyme, the Kate and Sidney with British beef steak, kidney and ale, and the Heidi with goats' cheese, sweet potato, spinach and red onion. If you're looking for meat-free options, check out the Mooless Moo with Jackfruit ‘steak’, craft ale and black pepper, among others. There's plenty of sides to get stuck into, too, such as minty mushy peas, smoky baked beans and cheesy mash.
But while these guys clearly know what they're doing when it comes to pies, the menu also boasts some other imaginative takes on comfort food. The 'put a stick in it', for example, brandishes honey, mustard and pig, hallumi or parsnip and kale, on a kebab stick. Or, the gravy fondue which sounds absolutely delicious.
Drinks wise, you'll find plenty of crowd-pleasing cocktails such as Aperol Spritz and Mojito, as well as wines, draught and bottled beers, and milkshakes.
