International fast food juggernaut McDonald’s has decided to launch a new range of scented candles, which when burned together at the same time, smell like a quarter pounder.
The candles are part of a new line of merchandise sold under the Quarter Pounder Fan Club (an official group for lovers of one of McDonald’s most popular dishes). Other items that you can purchase from the fan club include a 2020 Quarter Pounder Calendar, a ‘Quarter Pounder with Love’ locket necklace, and a Big Mac journal featuring cartoon drawings of the burger on its cover.
The candles are sold as a set of six, with scents including ‘100% fresh beef’, ‘sesame seed bun’, ‘cheese’, ‘onion’, ‘ketchup’ and ‘pickles’. The colours of the candles match the hues of the ingredients they are supposed to represent, so you can expect a bright red ‘ketchup’ candle and a dark brown ‘beef’ candle.
While the candles can be burned individually, McDonald’s recommends burning all of the scents at once, in order to fill the room (or your entire house) with the signature waft of a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder with Cheese.
The announcement of the candles was met with much ridicule on social media. One Twitter user joked that the candle set “stays on during sex”, while another questioned why the fast food giant didn’t release a fries scented candle, as it’s “the best smell to come out of McDonald’s”.
It is bad news for any McDonald’s super fans in the UK though, as the limited-edition set of candles are only available to purchase in the US. We perhaps shouldn’t be surprised that the candles sold out almost immediately, with no word yet on whether they will be restocked or made available outside the US.
At the time of writing, the ‘Quarter Pounder with Love’ locket had also sold out, but the Quarter Pounder Calendar and Big Mac Journal are still available, as is a zip-up Big Mac lunch bag.
