You can now see a restaurant’s most popular dish on Google Maps

As of 5pm today, Google Maps has launched a new feature which highlights a restaurant’s most popular dish, making deciding what to order easier than ever.

If you’ve ever had to panic order in a restaurant because you just couldn’t make your mind up about the menu, you’ll probably welcome the news of Google Maps latest functionality. The new addition to Google Maps allows diners to see what a restaurant’s most popular dish is, so that they can order from the menu with confidence (and without any fear of having food envy).

The technology is powered by a machine learning algorithm which matches dish names, provided by Google Maps users, with relevant photos and reviews. To use the feature, you just have to pull up a restaurant on Google Maps, and you’ll find its most popular dishes in the overview tab. You’ll be able to scroll the menu tab to check out the most popular meals and you just have to tap on a dish to read reviews and photos of it posted by other diners.

Restaurant groups like Hawksmoor above will have their best dishes highlighted

If you want to be part of the online dining network, you just have to take a photo of your meal and upload it to Google Maps, where you can add the name of the dish so that other restaurant-goers can see what’s good on the menu.

The popular dishes feature works while you’re travelling too – if you find yourself in a country where you can’t read the language, Google Maps will simply translate the dish reviews for you.

The function is live on Android devices worldwide now, and will be rolled out to iOS users in the coming months.
