The team behind hit Indian restaurant group Dishoom has unveiled Permit Room Lodgings, a cosy, boutique hotel located above Permit Room Portobello on Portobello Road.

The three-floor space, which has been designed by interior design group Macaulay Sinclair, features two en-suite bedrooms, a bar and breakfast area, and a first-floor dining room, while 1970s-inspired decor includes antique Bombay furnishings, huge arched windows, and parquet flooring. The finishing touches come from a curated selection of South Asian artwork, as well as handpicked vinyls, magazines and books from local South Asian retailers.

Prices start at £700 per night, with a two-night minimum stay and a maximum duration of one week. Guests will be treated to a whole host of extras, including breakfast in bed (or served downstairs in the Permit Room), unlimited house chai, and the chance to 'queue-jump' for dinner. A stay at the lodgings will also include the Permit Room's ‘Key to the City’, a local guide created by the team, packed full of ‘local hotspots, insider recommendations and exclusive perks.’

Shamil and Kavi Thakrar, the co-founders of Dishoom, commented: ‘When we began thinking about our Portobello Permit Room, we kept coming back to wanting to keep things rooted in Bombay, and the warmth that envelops you the moment you arrive there.

‘Some of our most cherished memories are from staying with friends and family in Bombay. The types of visits where the door is wide open and you’re ushered inside to be taken care of. What if we could transport our guests to a romantic Bombay residence? These feelings of nostalgia, and looking after people to the best of our ability, led us to come up with our Permit Room Lodgings.’

Dishoom first opened back in 2010 in Covent Garden, achieving legendary status that still sees queues down the streets years later. Its spin-off concept, Permit Rooms (launched in Brighton, Cambridge, Oxford, and now London) first opened in 2023, offering a more relaxed, all-day dining space where diners can pop in for everything from a quick morning breakfast to evening cocktails and sharing plates.
